But why bother when you can Google the sum of human knowledge? I have trained my brain to function in “Etchasketch” mode.

Now where was I?
There is something to be said for that. These days instead of memorizing everything we just need to remember WHERE to find it for next time we need it. But, if you want to go deep and develop the mental models needed in any difficult profession a lot of stuff needs to be internalized almost to a sub-conscious level.

Thanks for the links Aroxx. I did open them.

I need all the help I can get on recall. I'm afraid that my ol' tired brain is much like Holms' inelastic attic.

Reading may be inefficient, but I love to read.
I also love to read. I typically read about a book a week. It's just the way most people read is they blow through a book and immediately forget everything. Never mind make any change in their life. How you read a book is very important (if the goal is to learn and then employ what you've learned). A lot of times I'll read a book twice, back-to-back. Underlining key information and putting it all into Anki. If you want to get really meta there's a classic called, "How to Read a Book".

"If you learn something slowly, you forget it slowly. If you learn something very quickly, you forget it almost immediately." - Itzhak Perlman

In other news, if anybody wants to learn how to completely ruin a fun thread, I'll be putting on a masterclass later this week. PM me for details. It's not free. You senile bastards.

Could do worse. I came home from the office one afternoon and put a Colt .45 automatic in the refrigerator, bigger'n life, and I was only in my 20s at the time!

We have a 1500 (plus) volume library and my goal is to read it through twice before I die, for it takes two readings of a book for it to register on my pea-brain. Takes two viewings of a film for me to recall that I've even seen it.

Speaking of Itzak Perlman, we won't even get started on my recollection of music theory and ability to sight-read music while attempting to play it. Abysmal would best describe the performance.

I’ll be holding the follow-up session on how to not lie to your spouse about your hobbies and keep from being that asshole.
