Anyone ever get 'defensive' about their watch/watches?

Personally no. I've seen other people get rather uppity about someone saying an unflattering remark about their crown labelled watches... To the point of being downright offensive.

I have found that around certain people, you become part of the 'club'. I was golfing at our local charity tournament last fall to benefit local school groups, and of course there are several business leaders trying to one up each other. One fellow from out of town was in my foursome was feeling richer than the rest and had to keep talking about his business holdings(Jesus...ugh). He commented on how nice the houses were on this PGA golfcourse, so I proceeded to tell him the current market conditions. We just happened to be coming around to the 15th, and he asked why I knew so much about this area, so I told him I try to keep up the neighbors and what's selling. He looked at me with a bit of shock and asked me 'what'? I said yes, that's my house right there.....he then looked down at my wrist and saw the Presidential, and suddenly he was my best friend. What a douchebag.

Presidential???
Who makes that???

TIA

Well, elements of my own confusion were cleared up today when a guy who works on our books looked up and said, "You did a deal with (guy from original post here) - and he agreed to it?"

"Yeah, so the account's up to date, quirky guy though."

"F*$%ing a%&hole you mean."

Was not expecting that from my 70+ year old accountant!

That said, whilst I enjoy Rolex simply for what they are, much like Omega and many other marques, a few scrollings through TRF as well as this thread have reminded me how...delicate, I'll say, some Rolex folks can be.

I have a friend who thinks that spending more than £20 on a wristwatch is approaching decadence. However he was prepared to bid on one (1) Delft plate that eventually went for £30.000 -- he dropped out at £5.000 🤨 Not a rich man, he's a retired local schoolteacher.

Weird what some will spend money on / or not spend money on.
Laughing as I read

funny, $30 is also my pocket knife, pen, and flashlight limit ... 😁

in a Rolex thread the other day.

Seriously? Parchman?

Very famous place.
I've just realised that the song Parchman Farm (recorded by very many) was written by Mose Allison. I've been to just one of his gigs in a club in Montreal in 1974, absolutely great!

Here's one of the versions I've got -- Mayall+Clapton for all the blues fans here

Zero tolerance for any comment on any watch I wear...even if they like it.

I think he is not a Watch nerd and perhaps thought this watch would fly under the radar given the fact its an old Rollie with zero 'bling' factor.
Been made to talk about something he doesn't know much about, but is a heirmloom piece ,perhaps made him uncomfortable.

When I once made the mistake of disclosing to one person in my workplace that I was wearing a two thousand dollar watch, that information went around the office as the day’s gossip. Given the common, shocked, disdainful reactions to that disclosure, I learned to try to keep my mouth shut. And, I stopped wearing that watch to work.

Plenty of people will think less of someone who spends a thousand dollars on a watch, let alone ten thousand. I may discuss a watch I’m wearing with someone who expresses interest, but I’ll never mention value (if I can avoid it). If directly asked, I’ll be vague.

Yeah, I’m embarrassed at the value of some of the watches I own. I’m not comfortable with it, to be honest.

Not enough to sell them. Not enough to stop wearing them (I love wearing them). But enough to stop me from ever investing in a manual Daytona (for example) despite longstanding desire.

Or this, despite long standing desire:

When I read about the reactions of your coworkers it made me mad. What right do they have to dictate to you what's acceptable to wear on your wrist? It doesn't matter if it's a $20 watch or a $20000 one. You're not breaking the law. At the end of the day, you dress up to please yourself and yourself only. Don't ever be ashamed of your watches or your interest in them. Wear them with pride and in good health. And if someone gives you stick about it, tell them to piss off and mind their own business.

When I read the title I thought you meant like defensive in terms of when guys post a fake that belonged to their grandfather and think its worth big money they’d refuse to believe their grandfather would own a fake. What anyone wears or drives is their own business, many people take expensive holidays once or more per year but wouldn’t consider a watch, I’ve not taken a non work-related trip since I was a little kid as it doesn’t do much for me but watches do. just different priorities for different folks.

We all have our priorities, our possibilities, we make our own choices. Why the hell would one need to provide any justifications on choices he made? Life’s just a matter of making choices and assuming the consequences, not providing justifications.
