These guys apparently have a gift for marketing, and obviously have their fingers on the pulse of the watch collecting community. I'm seriously considering investing in their next venture, which, as I understand it, will be a string of bar/restaurants called Super Spreader Cafe.

Apparently opening week they will be closed. It's a marketing plan the chef has 😉

Gringa is awesome!

You know the hilarious thing with all this YT stuff is that all these guys want to brag and say I paid $50,000 for this Rolex or I paid $700,000 for this RM. But then if you actually go to a meet up of watch collectors, nobody brags about paying a lot for watches because being gullible and careless with money isn’t respected. So instead legit watch collectors brag to you like “See this Seamaster? I paid $60 and 2 turnips for it” or “See this Rolex Submariner, I got it 20% under MSRP back in 2011”. That’s literally what watch collectors tend to actually be happy and proud of, the great deal they got or how little they paid since that’s what takes actual skill and ability.

What's with this Gringa's fake-y British/Canadian/Californian switcheroo diction? There's a nasal Texan twang submerged in there somewhere.

could be why...

To be honest, I do not care. I am not native so English, Irish and American are the only 3 "native" accents I know 😁

I can happily say that I don't have a Facebook page and don't plan on creating one anytime soon. I have an instagram page that I use to keep up to date on F1 news, follow a handful of my favorite film photographers and family. The only watch accounts I follow are my watch maker, and a couple other members on from OF. I will happily keep myself blissfully ignorant to the flexing world and to the people like timepiece gentleman. Honestly, prior to this thread I had never heard of them. The most "watch time" I get is on this forum and it'll likely stay that way. I haven't felt FOMO from being here but instead live vicariously through others and enjoy seeing pieces I wouldn't see otherwise. 👍

Gringa is awesome!

I am convinced the vast majority of people flexing with watches online are wearing fakes.

EDIT: I'm not talking about Gringa. She's awesome. I mean the kinda people she is talking about.

You mean the type of people that charter a boat, don't pay for it, then get all agro at the captain when he asks for payment before pushing off?

Like other have said I don’t have Facebook, use YouTube for music and learn some repairs (although you gotta be careful about learning repairs on YouTube) but this kinda “circles back” to the environmental threads that pop up from time to time. We consume so much stupid nonsense it stands to reason we put out so much garbage. I’m not above that myself. We can’t “clean the world” if we can’t clean our damn brains. We have a constant barrage of nonsense beamed at us every millisecond. I’m not talking down here I get sucked in myself.

Oh totally, or should I say, totes?

In 200 years time people will be referring to the deep and insightful wisdom of Gringa in the same breath as they do Wittgenstein, Sartre, Mill, Marx and Locke.

I interviewed Gary Shteyngart last week for an upcoming episode of the Time 4A Pint Podcast, and we talked about the finance industry folks that he met when writing Lake Success and the GTGs they have.

They're interested in what the watch you're wearing cost. But the thing that scores you cool points is being able to say that you paid MRSP or below. As shows that you have solid connections, and good relationships rather than just the ability to throw money at the problem.

He was saying that these gents have no problem with spending money... but they don't see value in paying multiples of what something is worth just to have it. They want a good deal.

These YouTube douchecanoes on the other hand, seem to want to be ripped off. They think that's cool.

I never thought I'd say these words - but I'm with the bankers.

I think all these YouTubers/Instagram personalities/Influencers are part of the problem. Big egoes who feel the need to promote themselves.

Luckily, most of them seem to be focussed on modern watches.

I’m not sure they’re focused on watches at all… the thing they seem most interested in is themselves… and I suspect that if they could get likes/follows/sponsorships for talking about butt plugs they would.

Exactly.

I worked in the automobile industry some time ago when I was a big car enthusiast. I quickly realised that most people who worked in the business could just as well be selling white goods. No love there at all.

Having met a lot of folks that work in the U.K. operation of various Swiss Watch companies… same… they all go on about their staff discount, but none of them seem to give two hoots about the products or the company.

Watch collectors are a nuisance, unless we’re buying brand new product at full MRSP.
