I know: Omega and Rolex go head to head. But Omega:

Is it just because it's an anti-useful watch?

Yes, the first thing a watch ought to be is a way to tell time.

None ... and I mean NONE of the modern day wrist watch brands brought anything out causing the Stendhal syndrome with watch lovers ! 😁

I think new watches and technical innovations are more interesting than a different dial on a watch that has been produced since the 50`s. Gold and gems dont exist in my world, and it never will, even if " f### you money " should fall in my lap. But its fun to hate on this nonsense ! 😉
I really hope Omega dont go to far with this rainbow gem silliness, and become Rolex in the eyes of everyone.

I'm waiting for the model that allows you to customize the emojis to match your lifestyle. Mine would include the poo emoji for those really bad days

I absolutely love this watch. I would buy it if I had the chance. I think it’s really interesting

I do have a slightly different perspective - as a retired gemstone supplier, sometimes to the watch industry - I know just how hard it is to find these stones.

The graduated coloured stone bezels are incredible. Note how many of the stones are almost the same as the one next to it, but overall the colour changes around the bezel.

We used to select the rough from huge parcels, then cut the tapered baguettes (more like trapezes). Note how all the tables are exactly the same size, height and dimensions. Much harder than most think at first. Once we cut 100 stones, a;ready pre selected for quality, perhaps 10 would pass QC.

I kept telling them to uses synthetics (as the stones have to be 100% clean, which makes it extremely hard to ID as natural….)

back to the OP watch - I want it. No question.

But then I wanted the Rolex Rainbow (offered new to me in HK at Rolex) but couldn’t justify that amount on a watch at the time - and not sure I could today.

This raises some very interesting questions.

In many venues related to design or art, our perspectives can change once the nuances, history, context or social relevance is revealed. Your insights make us look at this from an alternative perspective.

In another example: if this dial were Cloisonné, I would view it with a different eye, given the work involved to produce it. But, then after the education process is complete, one has to step back, put that aside, and let the aesthetics wash over you as a whole.

And while I do, now, appreciate it in a different light, it’s still initiates a mild gag reflex…

I didn't get the Autism Awareness connection until I read this thread. If Rolex donates revenue from a 100k to 150k watch to charity then good on them, that's awesome. Otherwise, it's a bit obscene.

I don't mind the colored puzzle pieces. Kindof fun. Just not as much fun in a Rolex. It's the "Love" and heart emoji that disturbs me. Nothing says love like a 100k flashy watch from a brand name that screams exclusivity and vulgar rich.

I have more respect for someone who wore this. At least it's honest.

However, I do appreciate the craftsmanship of the puzzle piece watch. And if this watch is really for charity, that changes everything. Then it really is about love. It's a conversation with everyone you'd meet while wearing it. I just hope it's true.

Like what others have said here. Art should create an emotional response. And good art should raise conflicts and make you question your assumptions as you learn more about it.

(Edit: just to be clear, this is not good art unless Rolex truly is doing this for Autism Awareness. Otherwise, if not obsene, at least inauthentic.)

It's real, and there is no connection to Autism Awareness that I can see...

The new Day-Date 36: Time stamped with emotion | Newsroom (rolex.com)

If there was a connection, Rolex wouldn't be silent about it - it would be the opposite. Not very charitable of them...

Seriously, if they were doing something "for the children" or for some cause, they would make sure that EVERYONE would be told about it.

And to think they went after a children's Oyster clock using "someone may liken it to us" as an argument.

Hmmm..... really?

Well, both brands have created some significant duds over the decades. I can see this silliness fit into a large collection perhaps. I’d stay clear.
Otherwise, I like both brands in general. Omega has more winners in the current lineup. Rolex has been mostly disappointing. But hey - they sell every watch they make currently.

Ok - so it is silly Season for sure...

This new Omega Black Black Hawking is a step too far maybe. A tribute to Stephen Hawking's 'Hawking Radiation' and black holes. When time stops I guess. Nice to see the drop from 44.2 to 42mm... maybe a not to the answer to the ultimate question of life the universe and everything..... Still a no from me.

Call me cynical… this watch happens to be put out there in World Autism Acceptance week, which runs from Monday 27 March to Sunday 2 April 2023.
I notice this too. Hopefully the announcement is pending.
