14060M if daily wearer, 14060 tritium or 5513 without white gold index for vintage collection depending on budget - I am thinking about one (and no more than one!) but not sure which …

Hi Everyone, new member of this amazing forum, invited by @Thommas and based in France.

I am on the search of my first dream vintage sub. After long nights of research, building xls tables and whatching all available Sub videos on Youtube, below are the criteria I selected:

  • Has to be a no date
  • I love the simplicity of a 2 lines
  • I'd love to have Tritium for the patina

Based on that I identified 2 references: 5513 or 14060 (before they moved to Luminova in 99)

What is your view ? Did I miss anything ? Please show me your wrist !
Any interesting deals here on these models that some members might have posted ?

Thanks
Dom

I would go fo a 5513: a true classic for starting any collection, perfect as a daily wearer and if properly checked (glass and gaskets) also a great sport watch: one of the best buys in vintage Rolex.

Depending on budget you may just have to choose between white gold indexes and matte dial.

I think you need that Sea Dweller for daily wear and an older 5513 with a lot of vintage patina for special occasions. Problem solved!

You can't go wrong, and it's great that you are seeing the watches in person. Oftentimes perception changes once you handle the watches and it may differ from common perceived wisdom etc.

The nice part of Rolex is you likely won't take a huge hit if you decide to sell down the road.

I greatly prefer the 5513s for their vintage charm and wear them far more often. However, even though they are pressure tested, I am more comfortable wearing my 14060 on the rare rainy day.

that meters first is very nice.

5513 just says "classic Sub" all day long. 1520 is a pretty bulletproof movement that is not hard to service as well. To me- super easy decision, but it's like a good pair of boots- they gotta fit you, not someone else.

Having seen both in person, I'd go 5513. Its vintage look is amazing. I'd also suggest taking a close look at both watches in person and see which fits your taste better.

I wanted the vintage 5513 model when researching myself. Tossed around a newer reference. Ended up with a 16600 sea dweller.

My vote is for a 14060 with tritium, if using for daily wear. I do love the simplicity and symmetry of the no-date, two-liner dials, but ultimately I use the date so much that I'd miss it if not there. So I went with a 16800.

Hi everyone, still on the search for the holly grail. While trying so many watches since I originally posted this thread, I am really leaning towards a SM 5513 or SD 1665. But these are not cheap with many crooked pieces . Professional watch dealers are so expensive and I could understand the reason for the premium (somehow), they will ensure authenticity of the piece. As I want to have a tritium piece and can't potentially afford a 4 digit, I am alternatively also looking at a SM 14060 or SD 16600. These are my 4 daily search items. I have a Seamaster PO 44mm so I am not afraid of the SD size (4 and 5 digits I mean). Any recommendations on places to dig on the net for the Holy Grail are welcome 😀 Thanks people !

You are in a difficult position if you are simultaneously price-sensitive and also limited to buying from a professional dealer. I have purchased all of my Subs in auctions or from private sellers, and it would be hard for me to swallow dealer prices. What is your budget?

I am clearly not restricted to buy from a professional seller as long as I can trust the private seller 😀. I could push the budget to 12k EUR

I think that's a pretty solid budget for a 5513, TBH.
