5513 or 14060 for a first Sub ?

I was doing some quick math today and realized that the price of Submariners hit a historic low this year.

In June 1997, while gold averaged $340/ounce, a brand new 14060 retailed for $2800 at Tourneau. Today, gold is at $4900/ounce, a brand new 124060 retails for $10,500.

In other words:
A Sub in 1997 cost 8.2 ounces of gold
A Sub today only costs 2.05 ounces of gold

In 2021 was the time to sell watches and buy gold. Today is the time to sell gold and buy watches. It's such no-brainer. Subs at historic low people !!!! The price of 5513s drives me insane. So many unbelievable deals even on eBay. Watches are cheap right now, very cheap.
We are in a buyer market today…

Two beauties that I tried last week (as I said, still on the hunt). A beautiful tropical 16660 Tropical and a 5513 Maxi Dial…

This is interesting. A buyers market for Rolex, maybe, but if you want to buy a Seiko 6138 or Omega 14900 I feel it's the opposite; they're getting scooped up left and right. People seem to be looking for value - or at least affordability.

The run-up of some watches took them to a place where they're no longer accessible for a lot of collectors. The cost of entry for a vintage submariner or GMT or Daytona among them.

In the end I suppose it's a constant ebb and flow. The opposite will be true at some point in the future.

There’s a lot of asymmetry in the market right now, and it feels more concentrated than ever. In my opinion, vintage is where the real opportunities are at the moment. Modern and neo-vintage pieces, not so much in comparison. You can get a decent 5513 for the price of a modern sub. Not long ago it was the 14060 that was priced like a modern sub.

The 14060M might be the perfect cross between modern and vintage for every day wear. Has the durability and movement of a modern Rolex, with just enough vintage charm. 5513s can be a minefield of polishing, replaced parts. Probably not the best place to start with a Rolex.

Sharp looking watch. Is it from the 1980s? Looks very lightly used unless it was recently polished. Strong case regardless. Tough to see if bezel is not a service replacement and if hands are original (typically need to look at lume with a loupe).

You've gravitated towards the more "modern" 5513s... which end up being pretty close to the 14060. Did you rule out earlier 5513s with a rivet bracelet? Very different watches in feel and looks in my opinion despite being the same watch!. Much more vintage in feel if that is what you are going for.

I don't understand your correlation between gold and a sub. By "historic low", you mean relative to the price of gold. Could just mean that the price of gold is wildly inflated, not that Subs are historically low.
