Was just following an auction - online, in UK - strange mix of all sorts of stuff going for less than nothing - at the end, a few watches, in there! a speedmaster reduced - dirty, no papers, no box no history - AHA, might snatch this up at a good price............

Bidding opened at 1500 拢 / 1800 $ - and much to my surprice - went up from there - ending at 2250 拢 / 2750 $ + a 23 % buyers fee........

After starring at the screen for a few minutes, i decided - there's apparently so much i dont know... or - is there something with this watch that i dont get - please educate me 馃榾

Have a great evening all

There are several possibilities. Do you have a link to the auction description?

Damn! Someone in the cabal that has been rubbishing them for years to keep prices down has leaked how good they really are. We The Cabal will hunt that renegade down!

Or perhaps two people thought they could flip it as a moonwatch.

At least two people don鈥檛 know the difference in a Pro and a Reduced.

The excitement of an auction and the FOMO often produces unexpected results. That's why auctions can be good for sellers even after taking fees into account.

Reduced is a great little banger! Is it a Pro, no but I feel that shadow should be lifted because it's not really trying to be - any more than any Speedmaster is trying to be a Professional that has a dial that's not black or a date complication.
I have both and truthfully the Reduced wears better for me, and while I love the authenticity and history of the Pro better the wearability and the automatic movement in the Reduced appeals to me.

As to the cranked price... could have been a friend of the seller cranking it at the end to make sure it didn't go low (and he'll relist it after the buddy doesn't pay), could have been heat of the moment ~ which is typically followed by deep remorse the following day (similar to dating).

No - it was through easilive auction. There was no additional info other than the following text:
OMEGA SPEEDMASTER MENS WATCH

More Information
Hi,im not sure where your seeing Seamaster..?? This watch is completely genuine.....

That was the description......(couldnt help but copy it and save it together with the picture) - really confidence inducing message for a watch that - at least in my world - isnt among the cheapest - but still 馃榿 - likely as Davidt suggest - likely at least 2 didnt know the difference between a reduced and a pro 馃う 馃嵖

I'm still not convinced that they don鈥檛 use these kind of descriptions deliberately hoping for exactly this result

Own one and try to get it running right and understand why they are the ginger stepchild of Speedmasters. Hateful thing.

Oh, sorry. Yes you are quite correct. Hateful things. No use to man nor beast. Should be gathered up and crushed. All of them. ALL OF THEM!

I haven't seen you in our Cabal meetings before, when did you join?

We have one in our collection and due to similar disparaging comments/illogical beliefs we bought it as a non-runner for $225. Nice looker otherwise and complete with factory bracelet. I handed it over to our watch maker in NYC and $450 later it was running perfect with a 3 year service guarantee. Bring your watches to a qualified watch maker and it's not a problem. Ours charges the same for most any chronograph service.

As I've heard too. So much discord over the Reduced -- I see it time and time again, "Stay away!" "Not repairable only replaceable!" and finally "Will cost the price of a new Speedmaster to repair!" So much bullshit out on the interwebs...

every reputable watchmaker I've spoken with about the Reduced has either said they'd "rather not" (because if anything goes upside down they have to go to Omega) or "Yes, of course!" with price quotes running from $450 to a ceiling of $900.

All of which is to say, if it's a watch that speaks to you (as mine does - well not literally... unless I'm shit faced) there is absolutely zero reason not to move forward in acquiring one.

Somebody realizes how superior the Reduced is to the Speedmaster Professional. Thinner, higher beat rate, and automatic.::stirthepot::

I鈥檝e always wanted one- should have grabbed one a few years back when you could get them full kit for $1.2k freshly serviced.
There is no secret Omega sauce in this, it鈥檚 an ETA with a dubois-depraz piggyback chrono. Nothing new or unique either as many companies used (and some still use) the set-up. The reason I have been told that some watchmakers shy away is that it鈥檚 two movements in one. So you are basically servicing two watches in one so either have to charge for it or eat it. Sure, they can just fix the chrono or fix the time part- but then you are getting a half-ass service.
Or if you get one cheap enough (like Fred did), you can always send it back to Omega and they will just drop a whole new movement in for $800.

Doobee Dooprezz bro.

I love mine, have a V2 (sapphire crystal, higher water res with improved clasp), and have taken so much shit over it from Speedy Pro-Bois it's crazy... come on man, it's not like it's a MoonSwatch trying to find Uranus.

I'm inclined to go with the 'Cabal Theory', and am going to expose yet another Cabal-lero on our Forum: @Walrus . He's always going on about his "mundane Speedy" when in actuality it's one of the loveliest Speedy autos you'll ever see 馃榾

He would also have a fleet of Devil divers but the 666 on the dial scares him.

No reason to own a reduced when the triple date exists for the same money.

better movement, more watch, way more interesting, easier to service.

It's not 2008 anymore. All Omega watches are way more expensive these days including the Speedy Reduced. It was my first Swiss watch and I enjoyed the heck out of it. Sold it for more than I paid too.
