possibly the racing dial speedmaster was an attempt by omega then to revive the original racing character of the speedmaster, but couldnt overcome the market acceptance of established fame of speedmaster of being a moonwatch.

I bet the people working on them just weren't sure because they were out of the ordinary, so matched to the next closest thing, the Mark II.
