Hi everyone, after months of lurking the forums, I decided to join after I made my first Omega purchase. I recently acquired this all-original Maddox grail based on the Lemania 5100 movement from a reputable NYC dealer.

As you can see, the dial is not perfect -- it is missing the right edge on the date window, as well as the 3:00 marker. Also, the crown has some pitting.

The dealer advised me to keep everything completely original, but I would like to ask the forum members for advice. In a situation like this, should I send the watch in for 1) a NOS crown and 2) to retouch the date window and 3:00 marker? I wouldn't want to do anything that would negatively affect the value of the timepiece.

    Thanks,
    -M

Not sure the dare window needs retouching, I think the marker would cover that gap.

If it doesn't bother you i would not retouch anything. I am unfamiliar with this model, have never seen the "cross" Chrono hand before.

It's a very well-known and sought-after model. Read more about it here: http://www.chronomaddox.com/c1045_in_detail.html

+1 on leaving as is if it's completely original. Out of curiosity, could I see a pic of the crown?

The dealer also told me that the watch is "only original once." Since I don't have much experience with valuable vintage timepieces, I wanted to defer to the community on the best plan of action. Thanks, all.

congrats, your grail looks good. All parts are correct incl. the 809 end links. If that is my watch I only would change the crown and nothing else.

I woud even jeep the crown as is. But if you do change it keep the original safe.

    And your dealer is right.

If I replace the crown with a NOS correct crown, will it negatively affect the value of the watch?

If all parts are maintained for the next purchaser, all should be fine.
Regarding value retention.... that is an iffy subject...given this particular model is sought after by some collectors it shouldn't be an issue.
Keep in mind though, the value is always subject to fluctuations.

Great watch, one of those odd over and underappreciated watches out there. Some people are a little over committed to this watch, and others don't give this watch the respect it deserves, pretty polarizing in the views on it. Personally it ticks all of the boxes for me, and I would snap one up if the right one was offered to me.

Personally, I would not worry to much about the dial, the watch looks balanced missing the lume at 3. If you run across a good dial then swap it out, but I would enjoy it as is.

Nope bump it up a bit, as long as it is correct and NOS.

Yes, but if you keep the original you can always place it back or include it in the sale. Then youre ok.

Being as rare as it seems to be an untouched example will always be more valuable than a touched one

It uses a regular Speedmaster Pro crown, so 069ST43069. Based on the shape of the part of the cap that's missing, the current crown likely looks exactly the same as the existing, so the wider Omega symbol, rather than the narrower style used on earlier Speedmasters.

    Cheers, Al
