Self-imposed limit on number of watches in your collection?

Rules were made to be broken, my friend

This is so true. My thoughts about my collection are constantly evolving. I started with the idea that I should wear all my watches at least a few times a year, and tried to cull pieces that I rarely wore. This did naturally put a limit on my collection size in the neighborhood of 50 ... give or take 10. I still go through this exercise, and consider selling watches that I rarely wear.

But then I occasionally noticed that I had some watches that I rarely wore, but didn't really want to sell. Maybe they were rare, or in very fine condition, or appealing for some other reason. And I thought about other types of collections - like stamps, coins, or art - and came to the realization that I didn't necessarily need to wear every watch in my collection on a regular basis. I even have about 5 pocket watches that I NEVER use for their intended purpose. I pull them out every few months and admire them.

I set the lower limit at 5: steel diver, steel chronograph, gold dress watch, steel dress watch and a more casual dress with calendar on a steel band. It’s just fine to go above that lower limit.

Probably in the neighborhood of 15, which is is already more than my common sense is comfortable with. I haven't been able to let go of anything in my current rotation, but at least I've managed to not let my buy list grow. If something comes along that I feel I need to have, it's at the expense of either an existing watch or another potential candidate. I think I've pretty much got all aspects of what interests me covered (designs, brands, complications, etc.), so I think this actually could work. I've also got a family to support, so I simply cannot and do not want to blow all my money on buying and servicing watches.

I find myself returning to the same 2-3 watches even though I have a few more. I have put no limit on the number of watches I want to have at any point in time, but for me it does not make sense to have loads and loads of watches lying around I don’t use.

..What about you? Any (self imposed) limit? What are your rules?

SIL = n + 1, where n = current number of watches in the collection 😎

Limit = as many as I can remember and keep track of as individuals. I reckon there will be less watches in the collection as I get old(er) - which probably coincides with a need for money anyway.

I met an old acquaintance today who had that trouble remembering how many classic Italian motorbikes he now has. He pulled out his phone to help count from their photos and there were two for which he said "What's that?"

He was wearing a Rolex GMT though, the 'bikes and the grungy Classic TT races 2017 T-shirt probably puts him in the non-follower-of-fashion Rolex group 👍

Well-put, Dan!

You know it’s crazy. I was just thinking damn I need to buy a watch I haven’t had a new one in a while. Then I remembered I have a constellation and a dynamic being serviced. I have four watch boxes full now and need to pick up another or get one large one. It’s kind of crazy. I made one bad purchase last month paying 400 for a Tag Aquracer. In all honesty I don’t like Tags that much but I wanted to add a diver. It has now grown on me. I think I’m up to twenty or so watches but nothing like I see many of you having here. I live vicariously through many here.

Me too. Thanks to this forum and to Instagram, my virtual collection of other people's watches is so much nicer than my own!
