Self-imposed limit on number of watches in your collection?

I like between 3 and 5. I like to wear them so aside from a seiko diver which makes an appearance on holiday and at the gym, if I wouldn’t wear them over the course of a fortnight they don’t stay. I’m not a fan of having watches sat there not worn - just my personal issue.

I started by saying I would never break out of single digits.

But that didn't last very long...

I admit this rapid acquisition was probably a mistake. My approach has been too scattered. Too "there's something shiny" compulsive.

I'm in that stage I think many get to. The consolidation phase. Sell the watches that don't truly spark the love. The less charming or less perfect examples. Focus on keeping the ones that make me grin every time I put them on. And the grails I've yet to get and that I'm certain to adore.

Maybe that number will be around 20? 25?
I guess I'll find out... some day.

Great collection, and a very nice problem to have! If you ever decide to "Marie-Kondo" your collection, please list some of those gorgeous pieces on OmegaForums 😁

Currently I have a leather travel case that fits 8, not yet filled... depending on whether I reach 8 before attaining a true grail, I may add a small display case for a lucky max of 13!

But in the end, I would also be content with just two watches - one dress watch, one tool watch [plus my trident*... okay three]. We each have but two wrists, and I could never pull off the Maradona look!

I seem to wear one watch 90% of the time, then only about 2-3 watches for the remaining 10% of the time, despite the number of watches I own or have owned. I should cap at 4.

I had every intention of keeping it to 10 (the size of my watch case), then one went out for service so there was a hole, and then all these cool divers popped up and now I'm looking at getting another 10 watch case 🙄

I reached 263 but I'm slowly reducing the number. Currently 198.

My personal approach is to buy what I like and keep it until it no longer is something I want to keep, then it gets moved. This happens rarely, so most watches I buy I keep for the long term. The total number I own never comes into the decision making process on any single watch.

To me there's no sense in setting some artificial limit that would possibly "force" me to get rid of a watch I want to keep in order to satisfy that limit. I see this "limit" discussed on forums all the time, and honestly it puzzles me...

In my business I provide sports timing and results data live to broadcast for international sports events (think timing & results graphics for World Cup skiing, running clocks for 100m Athletics, World Cup swimming, NHL, etc etc). My watch collection is strictly limited to the brands of watches I have represented professionally, or outright worked for, and I try to limit the number per brand to two, so:

Rolex (equestrian & alpine skiing)
Omega (olympics, swim world championships)
Tissot (mountain bike, Universiades)
Longines (gymnastics, alpine skiing world cup)
Swatch (too many sports to list!)
TAG Heuer (alpine world cup in the 80's-90's)
Seiko (Salt Lake City Olympics)
Timex (Ironman event)
Casio (one forgettable world cup ski event!!!)

I worked for Swatch Group for several years so I accumulated quite a few of their brands but other than Swatches I am down to 2 for each, with the exception of Longines, I have one/need one 😉

Cheers

I think I have around 20 and I don't feel the need to limit yet. Although I have considered selling couple watches I have, I never pulled the trigger because I can't part with them if I really think about it. They all get regular wrist time, albeit some more than others.

Thanks! I may well post some here. I need to trim down the numbers 😀

Two wrists/watches is a popular approach. General Schwarzkopf, Maradona, Jack Foster (though one's an Apple watch).
My watches would definitely get more wrist time with that approach.

I have 4:

PO 2500D 42mm
Seamaster 300 MC
Modern Speedy Moon
57 Broad Arrow First Reissue

Trying to stick with under 5. So room for one more 😀

As long as I can still afford bread and water for the family, plus enough clothes that we don’t have to wear anything for more than a week straight, then I haven’t hit my limit.

46 including the Timex American Documents and Baltic Aquascaphe acquisitions this year. That's "enough". Basically now for any additions, subtractions will need to be made.

I think 10 is about the right number to have ( exactly my amount ) and in all that time I have only worn the exact same watch. Other 9 just sit there waiting their turn.

A few, to make me think a sec when choosing one for the day, but not more than what can fit in a box. 😀

Just add another box… 😁
But they are only containing 5 each so this is pretty simple....

I would like to keep it to a number that I can enjoy and wear...
If I do not wear it for a year then it should probably go....
Cheers
