That one hit $1525 which I think is a bit on the high side for just a gold-cap pie pan, interesting how so many Seamasters and Devilles seem to go so low of late but pie pan prices are always staying strong

I have always been a little puzzled by the idea that gold capped vintage Omegas are somehow less collectible than the same models in all stainless steel. I truly get the disdain for gold washed/plated watches of the seventies and eighties, whose thin gold layer wore off very quickly, but gold capped Omegas of the fifties and sixties are in a different class.

Good quality gold capping and finishing was quite a technical feat. The resulting layer of gold was more than enough to withstand prolonged wear for the perceived lifetime of the watch. I have several gold capped vintage Constellations and Seamasters in my collection, and get as much pleasure from them as I do from others in straight stainless or in solid gold.

I have on several occasions bought a gold capped Constellation or Seamaster in superb condition for the same price as the identical stainless models in over polished condition had been sold for. I suppose I should regard that as a good thing for my collecting.

Yea I know what you mean but in this instance it sounds more like he’s being honest rather than the typical burnt out husk of a watch described as keeping perfect time and letting people know it needs a service, which all Omegas of this era do

Absolutely, it's refreshing seeing someone list out the real problems they've observed. No colorful language saying the day not changing is probably an 'easy fix'.

I saved the seller, it's the kind of honest description that builds confidence in the other watches they sell.

I appreciate you, @dsio, for sharing all these Omega watches, but I feel like this thread has been clogged up a bit recently. I had email alerts set up for this thread and when a really unique watch would come up on the bay it sometimes would hit this thread. It's okay if this is the change this thread is going to make, but I feel like a bit of its shine has been lost...

Just one man's opinion. Don't ban me please. 😁

This one isn’t perfect the hands are a bit scruffy but at $530 there’s room to resolve that at service and if they took a lower offer even better. 166.002 with Calibre 562 are a nice reference that goes cheaper than they should, doesnt help when the photos are horrible either

On a separate note, this watch has been on the bay forever, it's coming out of Israel which is a minefield in of itself in terms of watches and ebay... All in with taxes which ebay collects these days even when ordered internationally (here in the US), customs, watch hands missing lume, and the service it is going to need and this is a hard pass for me.

I’ll play Devil’s advocate. Although I’ve only bought one watch based on this thread, it was a very nice gold capped pie pan Connie that has become one of my favorites. The more frequent addition of recommendations for less expensive but good quality Omega watches (e.g, more modern Geneves, Cosmics, certain other Seamaster models) does a real service for OF newbies who are still learning to navigate the minefield that is trying to find the few gems among the junk peddled on eBay.

I looked at this one briefly, but the abbreviated seller’s description and the heavily polished case (look at the case back photo) made it a pass for me.

It’s also a bad redial. That’s a significant sum for whatever is left of a former beauty.

While I’m with @BenBagbag that there are now much more “common” Omegas here, I still think it’s very helpful especially for junior collectors, so why not keep it going? Great effort!

Yes, that too. What a shame. Was a stunning watch at some point in the past.

As a newbie that's looking at affordable vintage picks, I agree. I certainly appreciate it (though there's that debate or do I pick up a Geneve/Seamaster now or wait for a Piepan Constellation...)

Na its all good mate, I’d just been focusing more on entry level stuff that new members buying their first Omega may be interested in rather than higher end big ticket items which tend to be identified and watch listed by dozens as soon as they appear, I had a few people pick up the Geneves, DeVilles and C-Cases I’d mentioned and PM me about them as they arrived and were cleaned up to wear so that sort of made me want to focus on that side a bit more.

On a separate note, this watch has been on the bay forever, it's coming out of Israel which is a minefield in of itself in terms of watches and ebay... Yea I get what you’re saying, I’ve had some good buys out of Israel in the past and I checked the sellers feedback out and it wasn’t terrible, the nice thing with a Seamaster 562 at a cheapish price is you can take it in steps and get the watch, maybe wear it on a couple of occasions while saving up for the service, then after service have a pretty nice solid piece and while its not crazy low, the last few 166.002/166.003 references went for a fair bit more and this one (which is nicer for sure) is already above that with over a day left to bid:
