I remember reading about some of the prototype gray dials about a year ago. Seemed like such an esoteric thing.

Well lo and behold one of the dealers I follow has one for sale now. A cool $32k. Between this and that $$$ racing dial I've seen on the for sale forum, it's interesting to see these rare dials popping up.

That racing dial isn't going to sell anywhere near the asking rate, its more there in case Mark Zuckerberg decides one day he has to have one and just takes the blank cheque shopping approach.

Ha, I will refrain from commenting on what seller pricing. Their watch, their choice.

My original comment was more focused on the fact that these neat dials are popping up on non-auction sites.

Here's a nice black dialed pie-pan with rhodium plated markers:

Movement looks to be in good shape also:

This one is right up @kyle L's alley.

Just a small matter of cleaning up a lightly made, rather crude engraving on the back.

Not bidding but it is on my watch list. 😀

He won't post to Australia!
If you want it badly enough its not hard to get a loaner letterbox wherever you want, but many will be ok with AU if you ask, I tend to throw in heaps of "G'day mate!" Crocodile Dundee talk into the message and the Americans and Europeans love it so much they rarely say no.

Surely the hands are not correct, too long. Uniform patina is attractive but the uneven patina of this dial is distracting and IMO off putting. A pity as the case and arrowheads are nice.

I realise that this isn't exactly unpolished, neither is the dial spotless and the hands look awful, but...

If I lived in the US, I'd buy this in a heartbeat:

I used to own one of these and it was one of my favourites. It is even claimed that the movement is serviced and if that is the case, this looks to be pretty damn good value for money. Original crown, case in decent shape, dial not restored/ruined (a LOT of these are either redialed or degraded completely), markers look fantastic... If I had that watch, the only thing I'd do would be to remove the hands and sand off the rust.

If it isn't gone tomorrow, I'll (once again...) put my money where my mouth is.

Looks to me like it is being heavily shilled...........

It isn't necessary an example of shilling.
I was watching this auction for days and the actual second best offer was made days ago and already beated other lower offers of different users: if you set an automaic offer you reraise on bidders who offered a lower maximum, and if they set a new maximum it is considered a different offer from themselves, but nobady can reraise on his own offer showing every reraise unless the reraise has always beaten by another user's automatic offer.
You can understand this by noticing that the second best offer was made before many others offers of different bidders..only automatic offers can beat future bids 😉
Probably there only were several attempt to beat the best offer that was automatically setted higher than he could think..
Cheers 😀

Seller is a Sacramento based watchmaker who does very questionable work. If you buy, cross your fingers if it runs!

Dang!

I've used Paul's quite a bit (maybe 6-7 times). He's great to work with and does stand behind his work but admittedly you have to know what to expect. His prices are very reasonable but I don't consider his work a full restoration. He will do a basic service and make sure the watch is working properly but he won't go out of his way to replace worn parts or to ensure the watch is running within COSC spec. Admittedly I've had his work on an automatic critiqued pretty harshly from another watchmaker but I've never had a problem sending him a manual wind. If you're looking to clean up an old watch he's absolutely fantastic. He does amazing work on cases, re-luming hands, crystals, etc. If you're looking for a full restoration on a movement I would look elsewhere.
