Gentlemen

Almost exactly a year ago and as a complete Omega Beginner, I saw this FS thread on one of my first visits to the Forum. A $20 2915, missing bezel and pushers and - as quickly pointed out - without correct dial. I was intrigued by the story and what I could see of the watch and, probably as an ignorant newcomer, I wasn't put off by the defects.

Fools rush in where angels fear to tread and before I knew what I was doing I had wired more money than I have since admitted to my wife to a bank in Canada and was anxiously awaiting delivery. I've been completely fascinated by the watch since it arrived and wore it daily until I found someone who would service it. Spacefruit and Flame (thanks guys) advised me to take it to Swisstec, the division of STS that doesn't have to send 321 movements to Bienne for a service. I picked the watch up yesterday and am completely delighted by the work of the incomparable Simon Freese and his colleagues. A modern steel bezel has been lathed to give a more aged and less obtrusive look, correct pushers and crown sourced, the dial (modern service replacement as it turned out) sympathetically aged and the scratches in the original crystal buffed out.

Despite the non-originality of some of the components and the evidence of many years of wear to the case (Simon thought that there had probably never been a hippocampus on the back and the SPEEDMASTER on the step is very worn), the movement is original and in good condition and I love this watch. Simon wasn't sure about the hands and I have included a picture of their undersides and would appreciate your opinions about them.

Thanks to OF for the opportunity to buy the watch, for the entertainment and learning and for the generous advice of members who I have messaged over the last year.

Simon, I should say, took the pictures.

What a great watch.

My observations have included 2915 casebacks with no evidence of Hippo etching, where the engraving of speedmaster is round the side.

That aged bezel is clever.

Hi,

are the dimensions of the modern steel bezel the same as the original base 1000 ? Thought the case was bigger and so the bezel, was I wrong ?

Thanks for all the appreciative comments everybody.

But what do you think about the hands? Could they be original? There have been a number of threads about the differences between the old and modern broad arrow hands, but these seem quite subtle.

I dont have any experience of these hands so I'm just giving my visual observations.

Comparing the main hands to a brand new set of hands from a 3594.50, yes the hands you have are different. I would say on yours the metal is thicker especially the mounts. On the minute hand the new ones have thinner and longer mount. Also the white sub dial hands look to be shorter than the current 3594.50 sub dial hands.

If you comparing them to some other watch then I have no idea 馃榿

I collected three very special watches myself from STS and Swisstec yesterday!

The watch in the centre has been a labour of love and an equal endeavour to your 2915, except mine had to have about ten parts hand made, the case lug has been laser welded and re drilled, the watch fitted with a near perfect (one tiny imperfection on the bezel edge at 12) NOS dial and STS even went to the extent of sourcing me NOS set of blued steel hands!

I value the work the boys in Essex do enormously and trust them with my most valued treasures, they never disappoint!

Your Speedy looks superb and well done to Simon and the team and to your for taking the leap of faith

Cheers Tom

That's a beautiful haul Tom. There was a lot of happiness in Hockley yesterday! incidentally, I did hear a story about a young member of your family, a lavatory bowl and some expensive watches....

Ha ha, indeed, about six months ago I was running our 2 1/2 year old son Rufus a bath and I turned round to a splash s he dropped my Chromo-Quartz in the loo! Thankfully it was also just back from STS and was absolutely fine! He has also since hidden one of my Marine Chronometers (which I found under his bed)

By contrast though about seven years ago my niece gave the keys to my brother in laws brand new 911 to a boy on a bike, thankfully he recognised her and the keys and promptly returned then!

Great looking watch. In cases such as these I think some discretion must be given with regards to originality.

STS are just very good, top job.

Is it staying on that strap?

Thanks SK. The strap is comfortable and looks fine to me. Do you have suggestions for better alternatives?

Not sure if the 1171 bracelet with 633 end links currently available from Otto Frei or Cousins will fit this case but I wear my 345.222 on mesh

No better alternatives, just alternatives .

I am not keen on the phrase "Tool Watch" but your watch certainly is one and I'm just not sure such a watch belongs on a croc strap or similar. Much too dressy in my opinion of course

What about something like this
