Chaps

The 2915 did indeed come with a number of case backs, I have one with a very clear hippocampus and the script (2915-1) but have also seen them without. They exist in both executions and both perfectly legitimate.

Here is my 2915, it has also had service replacement hands and bezel aged (also slightly later circa 1959 tropical brown dial) this is one of the few which exist with extracts, 2915-1 which was delivered in 1959 to Switzerland

Out of interest Where does the information regarding the case back being an option come from? I've never seen it in period catalogues etc..

Btw my 2915-1 also has an extract and was 'created' in 1959 as does a another that I know of, so I wonder if the few -1 with extracts all came from that later period of manufacture? Could be.

I don't think there was any "option".

I think you got wot you got given!

I think my earlier post might have been unclear, in that I believe both a clean back, and a hippo back were fitted to the 2915-1.

Chaps, I can't remember where I read it, leave it with me and I will come back to you

Ash, it's quite interesting as I've also seen a 1 with a later 2998 dial and had a few discussions with some very well known Speedy collectors about it legitimacy as the original owner had it from new. I have seen so so many of these early Speedies and SM300's with mix matches of parts which are legitimate. I've owned loads of 2913's and 14755's like this.

hm, Tom, I can hardly believe that a 2915-1 came out of factory with an early 2998 dial. Even within the 2915 range from -1 to -3 there are fine differences in the dial so it looks unlikely to me that when they swaped over to 2998 production they still sold -1's with the new dial. With the 2915-3 it might be another story as it is such a transitional short period that everything seems possible to me, bezelwise, handwise and dialwise.
.
Concerning the hippo the -3 caseback also looks already like the 2998 from outside with the word Speedmaster no more at the outer edge.

Completely agree on the Speedy, I have had a lot of 'parts bin' SM300's, by which I mean completely legitimate watches but with odd dial and hands combinations, especially 1755 and 165.014. The Speedy in question as one in the states I saw last year, I said there was no way a -1 came with a 2998 but I was disputed, it was also correct that it came from the original owner, but that doesnt mean Omega didn't replace the dial in the late 1950's/ early 60's when it was in for a service
