Manually changing date 8900

The 8900 is impervious to the problem of date change at midnight. What happens is that it just spontaneously gets stuck between various dates about once every 4 or 5 weeks. First time it was diagnosed as having a loose screw. It's with Omega again and this time they are ordering a new date wheel.

I think you may have misunderstood my comment. It was not regarding a problem with the date change for the cal 8900. I was simply suggesting that if you preferred the date to change closer to sundown (instead of midnight), a watchmaker could simply adjust your watch to make the date change at 6 o'clock for example.

I made a mistake. I meant to reply to Pandaspur where he wrote "For your 8600..."

This thread has caused me to think about whether mechanical watches (most of them anyway) really care about perpetual calendars. Left to their own devices they'd run as if every month had 31 days. A year could consist of 12 months, 10 months, or 30 months. I guess that's the equivalent of using sundials to tell time. Imagine what the date wheel on a sundial would be like to change.

A bit off topic but related to the 8900/9900 movements with jumping hour date settings.

Does it matter what time of day I advance the date? I understand with many movements that I'm not supposed to change the date between 9pm and 3am so I have to advance the time first (or wait). Just curious if it applies when using the jumping hour.

Nah I don't see why that would be an issue. We would never be able to change the date manually then if you think about it.
