Always been a Land Cruiser guy myself. They are large but built like tanks.
My first car, 1985 FJ. Couldn’t get out of its own way, 4 on the floor and redlined at 4krpms. Manual locking hubs which were really fun when you were already hood deep in mud, but it never left me stranded. I do miss that truck.

As a kid, I distinctly remember being in the back of a sky blue FJ40 freezing my toes off during blizzards in Northern Arizona, going around town while my folks were pulling cars out of snow banks and ditches…magical times!

I had the FJ60 in sand/brown interior. It had power assist brakes, power assist steering and a rear floor vent for your back passengers sitting on the bench seat…lap of luxury.

What I loved was that the back seat folded flat so you could put anything thing in there (or even sleep in it on an angle) the split tailgate allowed you to haul posts and lumber, and you could put it in low gear, let off the clutch and get out if it was stuck and it would keep the wheels turning and never bog, allowing you to shovel under the tires- then when it grabbed, it would just crawl so you could catch up to it.

Toyota made a polar shift on the Landcrusier in the early 90’s into a luxury SUV and when I would tell people I had one, they would immediately say “oh, how nice”…if only they knew how primitive it was.

Exactly. LC is a ifferent animal nowadays. They still make them tough in overseas markets, though. Of course, we don't get those here 🤬

My daily driver, and at my age, likely my last driver...2020 JLU

I have steadfastly avoided putting any overland-y stuff on top of this vehicle, as it would make it top-heavy and make its awful aerodynamic profile even worse.

Not sure why Jeep isn’t mentioned more in this thread. A stock Rubicon off the lot is far more capable and reliable than 90% of the modded mentioned so far.
I had a Cherokee XJ for a decade that took me to places for work that most people wouldn’t have dared- and that Jeep was bone stock with good AT tires.

If you really want to piss off the Hummer crowd, go with a lifted Mini Countryman All4-not a rock crawler but very capable for overland.

And this is mine:

Sensational daily driver, 6-speed manual (available through ‘19), a beast in foul weather and has taken many off-road trails easily. Will take up to 29” tires with stock suspension and with an M7 Speed 2” lift will accommodate up to 31’s. They also worked out most of the maladies of the earlier CM on this generation.

Aw, my wife wants a Mini SS!

I currently have a 2011 X5 with the diesel that I love. It has 178k miles on it, though, which makes me wonder, what's next? Massive investment to get it through the next 200k or buy something else. This thread started me looking and find there's a small overland market even for the X5. I'm not looking to rock crawl or ford rivers or mud bog but to fairly confidently go off-the-road would be cool.

Luckily, the specific Cayenne in question can be had for a very reasonable price these days. But that is for a reason lol. They can be a bit maintenance heavy, but I don't imagine a Land Rover to be much better.
And there is really not a lot of modification to be done if you get the right truck. Some trims even have locking difs.
With the air suspension on the Cayenne you can actually get a decent lift from the OEM bags.
Here is one with the suspension in its highest setting on 33's:

This is sick , I am not sure about the off-road capabilities though.

Neither am I lol. But from what I've read...you could do worse!
I think some 958's even have a rear locker option from the factory, which is more than some other off-road vehicles.

What’s all the hate about, I’m sure once the lift kit is installed that Model 3 will be highly competent off road! 😁

Well that was unexpected. But hey, good for you.
I'm actually a fan of the Model 3. I like the idea of it. Plus, those Dual Motor Performance ones are decently quick!
There was a guy who brought one to a PCA autoX that had a proper suspension (and tire) setup and he cleaned up! hah.
I would love to drive a modded one just to see.

hahaha I know I know.......... I was the first one to do not want :

- a new car
- an electric car
- a sedan
- a car that everyone has

aaaaaaaand I got a model 3. (exactlt @MtV once lifted, all good !)

That is actually the best daily car I ever had (for now....!) already did a trip to SF from LA, comfortable, quick, cheap. That was a long thinking to get or not a big V8 SUV as a daily, I went the safe way.
The fact that I had three cars in three years since I'm in LA made me think of going this way as well haha !

Still have my Hypermotard 1100s to make noise and burn some gas ! (when when I go back to France, 996 4S for more gas burning!)

So I take delivery of my Rivian on the 20th and still have an early Ineos reservation in the US... so one of them will most likely come up for sale.
