You bastards. Now you have me looking at first generation Cayennes. Did you know you can get them with a manual transmission?

haha yeah they look reeeeally good ! and f** rare in manual ! I am not a big off road guy, i dont know if it s an advantage or not in off road ?
3rd and 4th gen 4 Runner can be had pretty cheap and last forever.

I like those too.... but more attract to Cayenne or LR disco ...

I think some people off road with a manual. I just like manual transmissions. Most of my cars and trucks have been manuals, two of my current three cars are. I'd like a diesel Cayenne with a manual. Might have to look into that.

Nice. I looked seriously into a late-90s 996 4S in the early 2000s. Didn't pull the trigger. Went through a Z-car phase and ended up with the M5 several years later.

I think I put a little over 20k miles on my M5 over that work trip period. That included the cross-country drive back and forth, Maine to/from California, USA. The drive north to visit family in Los Angeles was terrible but I still love it. Now, traffic in my Ram truck gets a bit tiresome pretty quick.

Lexus Gx-470. Best stock 4 wheeler out there.

Probably cheapest and best bang for buck.

In a whole other league than a cayenne or LR3, but you may be looking for AWD and not 4x4.

Is this not a re-badged Land Cruiser?

Yeah the M5 was made for the autobahn, I guess long highway trip is not something the M5 hate !

Prado, which isn't sold in USA. In the US, the GX is an upgraded luxury version of Prado, which is a shorter wheel base than LC. LC are more expensive because of people looking to buy one, making the GX a great option.

Unfortunately, like vintage watches, the GX-470 has been discovered and prices went up some. The recent gas prices have made them cheaper. They were a darling of soccor mom's so nice used versions were ti be found. They can do rock crawling when needed. They are on a truck frame. GX

Edit: LX is similar to LC. GX has more HP than LX or LC

Not sure why Jeep isn’t mentioned more in this thread. A stock Rubicon off the lot is far more capable and reliable than 90% of the modded mentioned so far.
I had a Cherokee XJ for a decade that took me to places for work that most people wouldn’t have dared- and that Jeep was bone stock with good AT tires.

If you really want to piss off the Hummer crowd, go with a lifted Mini Countryman All4-not a rock crawler but very capable for overland.

And this is mine:

Sensational daily driver, 6-speed manual (available through ‘19), a beast in foul weather and has taken many off-road trails easily. Will take up to 29” tires with stock suspension and with an M7 Speed 2” lift will accommodate up to 31’s. They also worked out most of the maladies of the earlier CM on this generation.

I’ve always been interested in off-roading but never had the rig to do it til now.
And this weekend, finally got the chance to take the wife’s new car out for its first real venture off of the pavement. It was a blast, despite being one of the more “mild” areas around us.

All I'm saying is that I didn't expect to like driving through the woods slow just as much as I like driving on the pavement fast lol.

As an avid lover of the late 60’s Bronco (and my brother having owned a late 80’s Bronco which he tried to kill unsuccessfully many times as a teenager) I was thrilled to see them bring it back.

I’d second the Toyota Hilux (aka Tacoma in the States, only a step better), or Jeep Wrangler of any trim, but stock Rubicon would be tops. I have a bone stock Wrangler and it’s more than plenty capable for off road conditions. Noisy as all get out on the road, so a cross country road trip would be exhausting, but they are what they are…a brick built for overland, and getting there, albeit bumpy, loud, and a bit fuel thirsty. 4.0L in-line six is pretty much bulletproof, plenty enough power to get through most but extreme situations you’d find yourself in, and with skills behind the wheel, you’ll be able to get through much more than you’d expect possible.

Admittedly I’ve never seen a Porsche in an off-road configuration, and while it sounds very cool, I just can’t help myself from feeling I’d piss myself laughing at the sight of it. My first thought would be “you’ve got more money than sense…that thing is a well handling, speed hungry, SUV street queen you stuck knobbies on just to look cool and fu*ked up the handling”.

Damn it…now I want one…

All seriousness, the only thing I’d trade my Wrangler for would be a Takoma (or especially a diesel powered imported Hilux!!!!)
