Thanx for the pointer. Just thought I'd rather see it go to someone who would appreciate it more.
I can assure you that most if not all members of OF have access to, and regularly frequent, all the usual sales websites and auction houses. If your watch appeals to them they will find it there and most likely discuss on here if it is something special.

I pm’d the OP and bought his Ed White for $2500. ::rimshot::

Food for thought though. The 200 post rule does make sense but we put too much faith in it. An ahole doesn’t become a gent when they go from post 199 to 200.

But what about 1999 posts to 2000 posts. Will I become a gent....🙄.....soon...😕... I'm fed up with being an arsehole!🙁

No but you get an idea of someone and prevents scammers. If someone takes 8 days to 200 they still don’t get permission to post for sale.

I get why someone might want to access sellers here quickly, but if someone is selling, why wouldn't they just list it on ebay or suchlike and post a message on one of the accessable forums here letting members know where they can find the piece? OK, they've got the sellers fees to consider but I'd have thought that the greater competition for a desirable watch in the open market would raise the final price and thus cover those fees.

I understand the logic of checking here first to sell something. People here know what it is, they know what it's worth and if nice enough, are willing to do the leg work to get it. I inherited a small but valuable collection of fountain pens years ago, I know little about them other than what I researched (enough to know they are $$), and would rather not dicker around with Ebay, sellers returning crap, scammers, etc. I would do the same- go to a fountain pen forum and basically say- here's what I got, who wants to come get it and give me a wad of cash.

I think buyers have enough protection. PayPal 'always' sides with the buyer. So paying with a credit card via PayPal is pretty much risk free. It's sellers who need protecting and that 200 thing doesn't protect sellers at all

So maybe there should be a 200 limit for buyers.

Having said that I still think the 200 rule for sellers is fair. I don't for a minute think that members of the forum need that much protection but if the limit didn't exist then the sales pages would quickly fill up with all manner of internet jetsam and we wouldn't see the wood for the trees.

Also there's a chance that if somebody did inherit an old watch and come here asking for advice there's a fair to middling chance that by the time she/he reached the magic 200 mark they'll know a lot more about their watch, appreciate what they have and not want to sell at all then anyway.

The seller gets to see how many posts a potential buyer has, and the seller can even look at all of those posts. The seller can set their own personal minimum posts rule, ask for money wired instead of via paypal, or not as they choose.

I suppose the joke didn’t translate well with my drummer emoticon?

For $2500 it’s more likely to be a White Ed than an Ed White.

No rational person believes that achieving 200 posts in and of itself means anything. However, once someone has posted 200 times, they leave a trail that gives important clues as to who they are, what they value, how they think, how they perceive things, etc.

It's not the posts... it's what you find in them that counts! 👍

Have you ever checked out a person's Post history? It's easy and gives a nice history of what threads they participate it, if they have a sense of humour, if they give interesting advice, if they're nice or rude to people, ...

For anyone that doesn't know, you simply:

1. Click on the UserName
2. Click to go to their "PROFILE PAGE"
3. Click to go to their "POSTS"
--- scroll down the list and you can read each and every post they've ever made
4. You can also click on any post and it takes you to that post in the relevant thread!

😎

It's the real-world equivalent of:
- walking into a crowded coffee shop or bar
- heading straight to the person behind the counter and shouting "what do you have?"
- without ever looking around to see where the line is, how many people are waiting, what signs exist for ordering instructions, what menus are posted...

We would all look down on that "real-world" person... I don't quite understand why we're supposed to be so much more accommodating online... 😕

Totally agree, and I am a big fan of the 200 post rule for the exact reasons you state- I read the history of anyone from whom I have purchased.
But to continue your metaphor, if the same rude asshole walked into the same restaurant and announced “hey- I found this old Omega in my grandfather’s dresser and he worked for NASA back in the 60’s”, how many people here would say “oh, he is so rude, he needs to eat here with us for at least the next month or two” vs “hey, let’s go outside so I can see what’s you have in your bag.”

Well, the enablers who do this are part of the problem...some openly admit doing it. People come here with these watches and post for sale ads in places where they don't belong in part because it works...

I personally won't reward someone for doing this, but others will.
