++ the private sales thread here is good. most vintage dress watches are smaller and are fairly unisex. there should be stuff that pops up in the private sales section that is within your budget. goodluck
Excellent, I will keep an eye on the sale section

Welcome Kat.

It may be helpful if you post some pictures of watches that are getting your attention so we can guide you into a safe purchase that fits your tastes.

Welcome Kat. There are many pitfalls when buying vintage watches so you have already taken the best first step by joining here and asking before you buy. This may also help educate your eyes as to what to look for.

eBay can yield some great deals- but you really have to know what you’re looking at.
Awesome, thank you, I will take a look

Welcome @Kat.watching , apart from the very good advice you already got from the most experienced members here, I also wanna recommend you a youtube channel named Omega Enthusiast. Lots of great content there including extensive coverage of many examples of Omegas from the 40s, 50s and onwards and even videos made where you can train your eye, trying to spot what is wrong with the watch in question and comparing it to a good example.

Best regards from Germany,

Rudi

Hi and Welcome,
Lots of good advice here already. Are you looking for a ladies watch or are you wanting something with a bigger dial? Do you want vintage or more modern? A wind up mechanical, an automatic, or perhaps even a quartz watch?. Have a look as many pics here as you can.Try and decide what kid of dials , cases ,and hands you find appealing. Gold, Steel or gold plated/rolled cases (gp/rolled is slightly less sought after as it wears off) round case or square TV dial. or whackier 70's designs. Are you looking for an all round tool watch to wear every day, or something blingy for nights out. stainless steel omega bracelet included or nice generic leather strap?
700 dollars is a fair bit of cash and you can definitely get yourself something nice for that. Omega made all sorts of designs. personally if i was going vintage I'd be looking at the late 50's to very early 70's era...I'm a fan of the 6xx and 5xx series of movements, and on your budget you could get a nice 1st generation Dynamic, or perhaps a mid 60's Seamaster cosmic, even a Stingray/cobra if you can find one. As long as you aren't hankering after a mechanical dive watch there should be something there for you.
As others have said there is a private sales section here. Whilst not exactly on the cheap side, it is carefully monitored by enthusiasts and it would be a brave soul that posted up something for sale with major defects or false claims. Who knows you might get pinged on IM with a few interesting offers..this place can be a bit of a boys club sometimes and we all love to see women taking an interest in watches and joining in.
Best of luck and don't be afraid to ask questions here.
Chips.
I would like to get two eventually, as I’m new to this I would like to get a fully gold or two tone watch first, being more of a dress watch. As I still have so much to learn the second more vintage or collector watch I will buy later when I know more about exactly what I would like to own. I’m not sure if that is wise but I am happy to have less of a wow piece for the gold watch as the ones that are collectable and gold or two tone are incredibly expensive. Let me know your thoughts, thank you

Hi Katherine, Welcome to the forum. You have to really know what you are doing to find descent Omegas on EBay for a fair price. As others have said the private sales forum here has honest watches. Sometimes the prices are a too high, but often prices are fair or really good.

Collectors generally look for watches with original parts and original finishes. We will accept (or even embrace) a few imperfections in exchange for originality. Many of the vintage watches you will find on EBay will have repainted dials and over-polished cases. When a case is heavily polished you loose the fine edges and textures of a case. If you have a watch you are considering, feel free to post a thread asking for assessment of the condition and originality of the watch.

For examples of the worst see:

Fantastic, I will have a study of those, very helpful! Thank you

Welcome from another member down under.

Much sensible advice has already been shared, and buying from the sales section of OF would be a good way to get started (it can easily become an addiction 😉). There are real bargains to be found in the world of ladies watches as they are a bit out of fashion these days, being generally petite - I got a lovely mechanical Geneve off the bay not long ago for $50 and it looks great with its Milanese bracelet and square dial. On the other hand, I have a colleague who was gifted a larger vintage ‘men’s’ Seamaster and it looks great on her wrist, so both options work well.

Best of luck with your search 👍

Ok, here are some that I am currently watching on eBay (brace yourself for watch spam). It’s a real mixed bag and I’m sure some are complete no no’s but I’d love some thoughts! I also have a larger wrist so it limits my choices. As of right now I’m on the hunt for a gold watch. I have some Longines saved also but I’m not sure about that brand?
Thanks
Katherine

I would look at something local if you can find. I am in Perth, Western Australia and am finding that more and more overseas sellers are using the Global shipping option in ebay which automatically adds import charges which can be as much as 15% of your purchase price so factor that into your cost. I believe GST is only charged on items over $1000 AUD by Australian Customs but Global add the charges no matter what the purchase prices.

Oh really, great to know. It’s just so tricky finding watches that aren’t overpriced online in Aus, I may need to start venturing out into the real world.

Great, thanks, I have the day off today so I might hit up a few antique and op shops in my area and see if I can find anything ‍♀️

Interestingly broad spectrum of watches! The Omega De Ville Lady Stahl is an attractive dress watch, IMO. But, I know nothing regarding condition and pricing for these. I think I'd concur with @janice&fred though. Vintage is a land mine riddled field if you don't know what to look for, so the added 'protection' of knowing this is a collectors forum that will call anyone out for selling something that isn't true or clearly described is a huge plus.

Well its true, if someone shagged only one sheep, it seems unfair to call him a Sheep Shagger.
😕 Yeah but the first one's always a bit tricky William... Get em on the edge of a cliff, and they won't make a run for it! 😟

I suggest you visit the WRUW thread of this forum, there are 8000 pages of all the watches that are used daily, that could give you an idea, regarding brands and models, although in the end, remember that the best watch is the one that you like. And you can ask the owners about their characteristics and so you will know what to look for in each brand.

Cindy Crawford and Nicole Kidman should be able to inspire you with Omega. Good luck and enjoy
your future omega watch.😁😀

Welcome Kat. You know by now that the FS section will be your best friend. eBay although cluttered can land some awesome deals, but it takes some patience, expertise, luck and good timing. You can get some very nice dress Omegas in your budget. Going out on a limb, I could recommend the caliber 711/2 Seamaster DeVille. But do take out time to read OF and figure out your style. Good luck hunting your grail!
