I think it depends on what type of watch person you are. Some collectors would for example, wish to own the entire dirty dozen military set or all of the UG polerouters produced. These are very focused collectors. Others will simply buy what they fancy and think nothing of having a few hundred watches in their own personal museum, getting joy from simply taking the watches out and handling them and looking at them. Personally I am going to downsizing my modest little collection of about 14 watches to something like 8 pieces that I wear often and enjoy. It is the connection of wearing them that I like most about the hobby.
I agree and I enjoy wearing all my watches (I guess I'm not a "collector"). I purposely bought a watch box that holds 10, as I figured that's all I can wear. Right now it's overflowing and there as some I need to move to better homes. But I have discovered that 10 is a little short, probably 16 eventually.

If I count everything its about 20-25 watches in my collection. As Im done with buying Seiko 5`s and monsters ( I love them, but I have enough), I fancy watches I cant really afford. Like watches that are high horology, I guess my collection won`t grow to more than 30-35 the next decade.

Also I hate selling watches. So I keep 95% of what I buy. Im not much of a flipper. The last time I sold one was in 2018.

For me, an ideal sized collection is for me to work towards filling the watch box with 12 wrist watches, and having uncountable numbers of pocket watches hidden around the house like Easter eggs. I’m drawn to having most of my wrist watches serviced, but most pocket watches, other than a few that I’ll wear, can just sit around looking pretty.

Easy, 64, because that's 2 full CaseClub 32 slot cases. More than that and I don't have a waterproof, airtight way to store them.

😉

Great collection! I think you need one more watch to make it perfect. Maybe a one with a black dial?
Yes, picked this one today with black dial. Is it perfect now?

I once casually mentioned to a watch collecting friend that I had 16. He threw his back, laughed, and exclaimed "Oh, A starter kit!"

This thread need some pictures. Sorry, if I added the same pic twice.

Two words spring to my mind.
Holy S**t
Seriously, hats of that an amazing one third of a collection. You need a wide angle camera.👍

I'm there.

Yet, I soldier on.

It's so bad around here that I've lost a group of watches from one wing of "The Home For Wayward Watches.". We moved at the very end of October. The watches moved, but I've hidden them from myself. We had contractors in for remodeling and I hid them as I didn't have a safe installed yet. Now I find I hid them from myself. It's very annoying.

When your spouse starts complaining about how many watches you own.

I reject that. That could be only two.

Those two Fortis 8001 Marinemasters are sweet! I have the same two plus the Marinemaster 8002 (seems even more rare). You are the first I have seen to also have both 8001s.

In terms of collection, I have 20 split 60/40% between vintage and modern, respectively, after 15 years. I focus on quality over quantity, acquiring only pieces I must have and after significant research. No impulse buys for me. Most are chronographs. I always spread out my purchases. So far I have kept everything I have bought except for two. All watches must be worn regularly (no safe queens). I am still in the amassing stage but can see a day when I will become a seller of all but a few that will get passed down.

While I’ve slowed down in the number of watches I acquire compared to my initial years, in my experience the hunt never stops 😀 right when I think I’m done, I come across another watch I can’t stop thinking about.

as others have mentioned, one thing that naturally seems to happen is getting really picky — picky about quality or this and that style of watch, etc. which usually leads to a more personal collection uniquely tailored to you! Watch collecting is great.

I feel normal after seeing your collection, and others like @MSNWatch, @Bill Sohne, @LouS and @adam78 ...😁

My SO says 12, i.e. the size of my current watch box. I need a larger box.
