How many watches in your collection before its too much?

Whoa, for those with over 30 watches in your collection how do you find time to wear all of them? This may be a personal habit thing but once I get too many options it starts to be a headache deciding what to wear so I end up wearing a "go to" watch.

It’s easy these days, pick 2-3 watches a day to wear as we are all working from home.

Gee I bought 20-30 years ago just to stop the other greedy bastads here owning them...

2014 -16 was crazy times here for vintage watches. Well before investment/modern influences took over....

I myself wear a core 3-4 for daily work but enjoy a choice of many for outside of work.

I use a value v/s value equation to see if I can add more watches.

If the value of my motorbikes and cars is greater than the value of my watches, I can add to the watch collection.

Conversely, if the value of my watches is the greater, I can go bike or car shopping.

Simple really.

the obvious answer is 1. really, do you need more than one to keep track of time? no.

....but then, that's why we all come here -- for the group therapy for our OCD! Among friends, you can have as many as you want!

I think it depends on what type of watch person you are. Some collectors would for example, wish to own the entire dirty dozen military set or all of the UG polerouters produced. These are very focused collectors. Others will simply buy what they fancy and think nothing of having a few hundred watches in their own personal museum, getting joy from simply taking the watches out and handling them and looking at them. Personally I am going to downsizing my modest little collection of about 14 watches to something like 8 pieces that I wear often and enjoy. It is the connection of wearing them that I like most about the hobby.

Ooof, I'd feel too guilty having all those watches for display purposes. That's something that stuck with me growing up poor. also no room in my tiny NYC apartment to house all the watches I want if I could overcome my mental block of keeping watches I don't wear.

Who said anything about display? It's a collection, not an exhibition. Watches take up very little space, just throw them wherever. You can probably put a few dozen in a toaster oven. 😁

If this doesn't make sense to you, you're probably not a collector, which is fine. 👍

When I can't name all of them after about 30 minutes, it's probably time to consider selling the ones I forgot (I'm still under 20, not my fault so few watches temp my wallet 😜)
That's me sometimes with a 15-20 piece collection but I have absolutely horrible memory LOL

I like this plan. Forces gradual consolidation. Within 10 - 15 years I’ll be down to two or three. 😵‍💫
