Hoping for a bit of assistance

Black dial dress Seamasters are almost always refinished, and if they're not then the price goes ape. Probably best to forget about getting one of those as your first vintage Omega. The majority of ebay watch dealers specialise in knackered old dogs which they polish and redial for the benefit of naive enthusiasts, of which there seems to be an endless supply prepared to pay more for their crap than for a decent original example. "Guilty until proved innocent" should be your default position.

ETA: A word of warning. The more you find out about vintage Omegas, the more interesting it gets and before you know it, you are a collector. You have become a bear that fell into the Brea Tar Pits. Sometimes people are actually better off buying a done-up watch from a dealer, never researching it and living happily ever after with it in blissful ignorance - as long as they never run across a watch collector. Something about the wording of your first post tells me you have the potential to become ensnared. It's like smoking: you think you're in control, but you're not.... You can stick around here and become one of the addicts, or you can run away before it's too late!
