I told the guy he was nuts and showed four on offer at Chrono24 between £5600-6000. He said, his was unworn, with all stickers and tags, full warranty ... and that he's paid £3000 down with the rest on HP (at 29.9%!!!!). He thinks that he can sell it in a couple of years, still unworn and at profit.

I think he's crazy and will be £2k to the bad plus the interest. The four examples on Chrono24 are also NIB.

A fool and his money are soon parted!

FWIW, I've been told by a big second hand seller that the 216570 does not sell that well, and there is demand for the older 40mm 16570, prices are slowly rising. At least in watchrecon/europe, an Explorer II in good shape of either reference is not seen often.

So maybe Rolex's strategy is paying off : it finally created demand for the 216570.

I wonder what will happen to the 16570 on the used market...maybe it will turn into a hot watch? Amusing to see how the watches stay the same, and the market around them change so rapidly.

A mate has a 16570 Polar, I think it’s 2008/09 vintage. He bought it a couple of years back s/h from a dealer for £3k. Same dealer has offered him £4K for it not too long ago. So maybe it’s turning into the hot watch after all.

I’d buy one but can’t really do it when a friend of 30+ years already has one 🙁

A 2008/9 assuming it’s the 3186 movement with b&p will be worth over 5k I suspect. Getting harder to find and will sit on the coat tails of the 16710 rise.

I have never understood why the Exp II isn’t more popular. I’ve never regretted getting it and I wear it often.

Love that big orange hand on black dial. I would have already bought one if the case size is slight smaller.

You know there's a 40mm as well as the 42?

I'd be willing to bet the orange GMT hand is interchangeable.

ive always thought the explorer 2 was nigh indestructible, changing that bezel to ceramic might change that

I'd be willing to bet they are not of the same length. Case has a 2mm difference, it should translate into a difference in dial diameter and hand length. Also, 216570 has very fat hands, it could look strange combined with the thin hands of 16570.

If only they had made a more interesting GMT hand on the 40mm...

There is an orange hand for a 40mm dial - are you meaning the "floating" hand is the one you want?

There is a GMT orange hand for the ancient 1655 (40mm), but it is not the same movement than the 40mm 16570, so not sure it fits. The only other GMT orange hand I know of if for the 42mm 216570 (as I said, may fit the movement, may be too big for the dial).

This is why I love this forum. I never noticed sooo many differences between the two versions. Thanks

Very interesting news. I had a thread back in July dedicated to my Scottish hunt for an explorer 2.

I wanted a SS model and this seemed like the only realistic option without entering the gray market. The more I looked at the watch, the more I liked it!

It required a bit of legwork and ringing around but I managed to get one on my wrist relatively quickly. A few dealers also contacted me within a few month s afterwards to say they now had one available.

There are probably several people like me wanting an SS model, don't want to pay a premium, so end up going for the explorer 2, so not surprised it's becoming less ubiquitous.

It's a great watch and I'm really happy with the purchase. Had to be polar for me, though the black was also beautiful.

Baffles me why it is regarded as somewhat of the redheaded stepchild of the SS series...I think it's one of the best ones they make; it looks great and is highly functional with less bling than many. Only downside is I don't have one!

A few pics!!

Here it is next to my Speedie. I took this to show a friend the size of 42mm watches. I think the size of the explorer 2 is perfect and modern, though appreciate it's relatively big compared to the rest of rolex's stable

No offence meant, but the Polar Looks very nice on your skin tone. Very nice contrast.
