Auction for the bezel up again - IMO it's an "original" bezel with a newly manufactured insert.

Ya. This is probably correct. It would be alot of effort to produce the bezel to the right dimensions. But the insert is wrong.

In situations like this I always follow: Ockham's razor

Reproduction.

What a weird guy. Just own up FFS. I could imagine there might be a market for replacement bezel inserts like this at a reasonable price given the catastrophic condition of most originals and little prospect of a genuine Omega replacement in the future but don't pass them off as original.

I cannot say if the bezel is original, but if it's fake it's really well done. I know that this eBay user some years ago was making reproductions of omega base 1000 bezels, black and silver, and rare hands. Reproductions that he was selling, honestly, as reproductions.

I bought a pair of replica alpha hands that I conserve jealousy in my drawer... (It was a big error...)
Anyway The fake eBay auction make me really piss me off.

I haven't got a clue what's going on.

I just want to be able to tell my Grandkids that I was actually one of the posters on this thread.

This seller definitly has black replica BASE1000 inlays in his stock since many years.
Howerever I know that he, couple of years ago, purchased a really nice 2915-3 with a minty bezel which I was also after.
Dont remember though if it was this very bezel.
To my researches there are two different versions of the BASE1000 black bezel. I have both of them and should compare with what we disucss here.
The guy is mad. With his greed showing up in summer with the steel bezels he destroyed all his reputation in the Omega collectors world. And asking 35k for a black Base1000 bezel, even if it is correct, it is totally unrealistic. Guys, I have a 100% real BASE1000 bezel lying around. If somebody is interested, at 35k I will sell it! 😁

Welcome Robby

The original Speedies, the 2915-1 and 2915-2 and some 2915-3 had steel only base 1000 bezels in two different styles, referred to as A1 and A2 in Moonwatch Only. Beginning with the later 2915-3 and thru the 2998-1 and 2998-2 the base 1000 bezels were changed to a black aluminum insert attached to a steel bezel (again two styles referred to as A5 and A6 in MWO). Both of the base 1000 bezels that I posted are style A6 which are DON (dot over 90) bezels. The A5 are not Don. The black bezels were also slightly larger in diameter and their construction style of aluminum insert in a steel bezel has been used on the Speedie ever since.

There are no Omega factory replacement base 1000 bezels. When the base 1000 bezels were fazed out, in 1961, replacement bezels were Tachymetre 500 bezels. That's the reason the base 1000 bezels are so rare.

Hope that helps.

There is a third style of the steel bezel that's on a couple of watches belonging to the Omega Museum that MWO doesn't mention. It has the so-called run-away-dots.

Beginning with the later 2915-3 and thru the 2998-1 and 2998-2 the base 1000 bezels were changed to a black aluminum insert attached to a steel bezel (again two styles referred to as A5 and A6 in MWO). You actually have two different bezels. The 2998-2 has A5 and 2998-1 has A6. The one in question may be a third variant, like speedy4ever mentioned earlier.

Since the metal 2915-1 and 2915-2 bezels had the open "C", I thought that the black 2915-3 and the 2998-1 base 1000 bezels with open "C" was a continuation of the same font and thus original. Like this:
http://www.moonwatchonly.com/Moonwatch_Only/Model_Example.html
So did they make the A6 bezel first with open C and then transition to closed C before they phased into the 2998-3 500 bezels which also has closed C?
(Are there old advertisements showing 2915-3 or 2998-1 with closed C? All the ones I have seen have open C.)

Someone posted while I was writing.
So the A5 is open C and A6 is closed C?
