3861 Speedy pro 2020

Omega has stated this is their goal. Everything points to the 3861 being the new standard Speedmaster movement.
For me it doesn't make mach sense, the 3861 is too far from 861, they need to maintain a straight line from the moonwatch. As Eastman was saying, anti magnetic movement but the same. I imagine 1861 with a silicon hairspring and hasalite. That would be close enough a good enough evolution and maybe they can meta certificate.

Maybe the 3861 for the sapphire sandwich?

And you'll pay $1,000 extra just for this hairspring? You aren't likely to make METAS with the 1861, even with a magic hairspring. Don't get hung up on this DNA link, the advantages of the 3861 (rate, hacking, power reserve) are significant, Omega aren't going to ignore those advantages.

It is all hearsay, but multiple Omega employees (incl. Mr. Aeschlimann) have publicly confirmed that the 3861 will make it to the standard Moonwatch model. For example this was said at the 50th year celebration in Cape Cod in 2019.

Economically, why should they keep 2 movements at the same time? They did also not continue to produce the 861 once the 1861 was released.

Pretty sure they will also have the 3861 Nasa certified - but guess that takes time.

But hey - time will tell!

I can't see the powers that be spending their resources designing a METAS certified movement the same size as the current cal 1861 and only use it for LEs or LPs in the future.

I'm looking forward to an announcement, just like with the Snoopy 50th. I'm fortunate to have an A11 50th and I'm on a list for the next Snoopy. If the 3861 does replace the current 1861 all it means is that I can pick one up down the line to complete a wonderful modern trio.

The Moonwatch has always evolved... 321, 861, 1861 and now possibly the 3861. I say enjoy them all for what they are and the historic events their predecessor's have been apart of. Whether or not I decide to buy any previous iterations (I have to home my skills, knowledge and patience), I'm proud to consider what I already have.

It's a perfect opportunity for Omega to evolve the piece and for me is part of the excitement and anticipation on their delivery.

The 1861 DNA link is so important at least for me. I know 3861 is a big improvement over the 1861 but I still need a 1861 (and a 321) on my collection even being an old movement with all defects.

But you are almost certainly in the minority for the future Omega target audience. This DNA link is not that strong for most buyers. It may be for the types that hang out here on OF, but for the general public, it's a big 'meh'.

And I disagree that the 3861 breaks the DNA link.

1861 is the same movement, the 3861 is not. There are plenty of Speedmaster that can have the 3861 (snoopy being the last announced) the hesalite speedy shouldn't imo. Main stream omega buyers have lots of speedy's options with lots of movements. Purists only have one, the hesalite 1861.

Well, I disagree. Purists like/love the Ed White 321 as well. Movement-wise it's the real deal. The sapphire glass does not seem to be the deal breaker either.

I like the Ed White 321, I'm on the list, but It scratches a different itch. I consider myself a not so strict purist whatever that means so I need to have a hesalite, a 3861, a 321.

But you are right, to many people the sapphire glass is not a deal breaker, will the movement be?

Soon enough we will know the future of the moonwatch.

Well I'm pretty excited: I've got three Speedmaster, but I'm still missing the «normal» one. So I'll wait and see what happens: Either I'm going for the current 1861 or the new one (probably with the 3861). If the new Speedmaster is still scheduled for 2020, it should be released soon.

You mean three - they already make 2. The "new" 321 and the 1861. Oh wait...the 1863, and are they still making the 1866? What about the Speedmasters with the 9300 and 9900's, do they count? 😀

The "doesn't make sense because too many movements" argument doesn't really fit with how Omega has done business in the past, as Omega have been making Speedmasters with multiple movements in them for a very long time. Not all are Pro's, but the Speedmaster line has used a large number of movements...off the top of my head (so possibly not complete) for the Pro versions:

321
861
863
864
866
1861
1863
1864
1865
1866
1869
3861

Then the non-pro list, which is large also:

1143
3220
1150
1151
1152
1155
3201
3301
3303
3313
3330
3601
9300
9900

So keeping one more in the line up is not likely a big concern I suspect.

Cheers, Al

Just saw that all of the Speedmaster Professionals - bracelet and strap versions - now say ‘Contact a boutique about this piece’ on Omega’s website. I believe they were still available for order within the last few weeks.

Interesting... In Sweden only the 006 is available for purchase directly from Omega's website.

Here in Portugal at the Ad, they are all sold out. When I bought mine 3 weeks ago, they told me that they only had 5 hesalite on stock and no sapphire. And they moved like hot cakes.

I don't know in the OB

Despite what I saw on the website earlier, and then commented, Omega posted the hesalite/black alligator strap Speedmaster on Instagram today and they seem to be in stock. Either way, it seems like stock is dwindling until the new version comes out.

I just keep going back and forth whether I want to get one now or wait until the update comes out.

People need to stop over reacting every time the Speedmaster is shown as 'out of stock' or 'contact your OB'. This doesn't mean the model is discontinued. Omega will eventually tell us what their plans are, supposedly by the end of the year. Anything else is mindless speculation. That seems to be a hobby on OF, but just a waste of time.

Only thing that's been confirmed is the CEO said a new moonwatch is coming out next year in an interview.

This thread is literally speculation about the new Speedmaster; details about the movement, bracelet, case design, release date, and everything else related to it. I see you’ve been on this forum for quite some time but viewing others’ speculation about something as “mindless” or a “waste of time” is merely your opinion.

People talk about the next iPhone as soon as the upcoming model is announced. Same with camouflaged Porsche 911’s, BMW M cars, etc. Let people be excited and talk to other enthusiasts about their hobbies and passions.
