I don't really understand why Kimi has elected to go to a second tier team that has a low percentage to even get on the podium.

Do you honestly think it was his choice?

I had this thought as well even though he does have some history with the team already...
Also read somewhere that he is the youngest driver at Ferrari since sometime in the 60's.
He seems like an all around good dude at the moment.
I am looking forward to seeing him in a competitive car.

The youngest is Ricardo Rodriguez who drove for the Scuderia for the first time at the Italian Grand Prix in 1961 at 19 years and 208 days. He died the following year in practice for the Mexican Grand Prix in a one off drive in a Lotus because Ferrari had stayed away from the Mexican GP that year. Different times!

As a fan of Kimi I’m surprised he is willing to end his career at a second stream team, and disappointed Ferrari have dropped him. It will be interesting to see how Leclerc shapes up next season and how Vettel will react if he proves to be as competitive as most people seem to think he will be.

Kimi doesn’t care where he’s racing as long as he is racing. The man drove NASCAR trucks.

Isn't stroll going to Force India or whatever the new name is now? His father is now one of the shareholders of the team.

As for LEC challenging Vettel in the first year....I have to agree with @vbrad26 it will be a learning year for him in the big team, a bit like Massa and Schumi before he left.

Of course it was his choice. He could have retired, or tried to catch on with another team. Or go to NASCAR and race Alonso or WEC.

Certainly, but it hasn't been formally announced yet for some reason. The chart I posted are for officially confirmed seats.

I sorta was thinking there was a chance that Kimi would go to Haas and replace Grosjean if Ferrari moved on. They are basically the Ferrari B team anyway and it would give them some star power. Plus they are doing much better than Sauber so it's a more competitive drive.

Things are probably more locked up in terms of driver seats than we, the general public know...
Maybe in reality Kimi really had no choice...either Sauber, or retire...

Certainly, more are locked up but not announced. But he still had a choice. No one literally forced him into the Sauber cockpit. He wants to keep racing in F1 and Sauber was the best option for him. No shame in that.

Wouldn't he be such a great candidate for Formula E? hah...

I've tried watching Formula E. If the race cars aren't loud then they need to be really really fast. They aren't even visually appealing.

Ugly cars.
Quiet.
Slow (ok, they are fast but need to be equal to F1 or better).
Skinny tires.

I'll let the tree huggers go watch them race.
Give me fire breathing dragons for race cars. That's what I like.

I will be watching once Porsche joins as a manufacturer for the 2019 season.
The Gen 2 car looks a lot better IMO, and the fact that they won't have to change cars half way through the race is also a bonus...

I have not bothered to follow because I have had ZERO interest in it.
But the fact that Audi, and now Porsche are involved has piqued my interest.
So I will give in..or rather, give it a shot.

The definition of a "Formula" car is open wheel. Correct?
I love Porsche but I will NOT watch quiet cars on bicycle tires zip around in circles.

The only way I watch electric vehicles is when they are doing battle.

Not exactly. Technically all classes have a formula.

Yes, I do. He could have just retired. He wasn't under any contractual obligation.

You sure? Granted, wiki is not ultimate proof but when you add it in with my opinion 😉

I hate to say it but you may not have much of a choice in the near future...
The fact that Porsche left WEC to pursue FE speaks volumes (to me) as to where they think the future will be heading in both racing and road cars.
Same with Audi.
Did "Dieselgate" have something to do with this? Yeah, maybe. But it would still probably be inevitable.
How many race cars are glorified hybrids now?
I think it is only a matter of time till F1 and FE merge into a single entity.
I HOPE I'm wrong...but that is my gut feeling...

Open wheel, by definition, is having the wheels outside of the MAIN body.
While the new FE car does have "bodywork" around the wheels, I would still consider them to be outside of the body.

Common usage denotes formula only to open wheel. But remember group B was a formula...

They just used the name formula on the cars not based on production cars. So like I said kinda sorta.
