My late father's techno-whiz-bang Seiko chronograph, on the third anniversary of this passing
😀
Chosen by his parents to inherit and run the family farm for the fourth generation, he broke from the plan and became the first in his family to go to university. Which cost him every penny of his inheritance. He went on to earn Master's and Doctorate degrees, and really, never stopped learning.
He was one of the original techno-geeks. In the mid-1960s what we now know as Information Technology was called
Data Processing. He was a pioneering member of the professional organization called the Data Processing Management Association. He loved programming, writing in COBOL or FORTRAN for enormous room-sized computers.
And man, did he love this watch. He purchased it sometime around 2015, and wore it every day up to the final hours of his life. Each time I visited him after an extended absence he'd be sure to tell me how awesome this watch was. Solar-charged and radio-synchronized, for him this watch represented the highest horology. Before the Seiko he usually wore a Timex Ironman because he was an avid runner, competing in races into his mid-80s.
It's curious that he latched onto this watch, rather than a smart watch given his love of avant-garde technology. I think for him, this watch embodied a satisfying blend of the analogue past with the digital present.
I also think that I inherited some of his taste in watches, as I seem to gravitate toward the toolwatch end of the style spectrum.
