All day I listen to and watch aircraft landing and taking off. My job is just about 3 (maybe less) miles off the north end of all 3 north-south runways at Dulles International (IAD).
Listening to tenor sax man Sonny Rollins masterpiece, The Bridge. Recorded in NYC in Jan-Feb 1962 for the Bluebird imprint of RCA. Reissue in 2003 as part of the First Editions collection. Essential hard bop.
Today's offering is Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers while I'm traveling home. Recorded in October 1958 at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Hackensack, NJ it featured inspired trumpet playing from Lee Morgan and the iconic piano riff from Bobby Timmons on the title track. Even if you don't know jazz, you likely know that song. Essential hard bop classic.
Today I'm throwing out Jackie McLean's Destination Out!. Recorded September 1963 on Blue Note Records. Opening track "Love and Hate" is a stand out for me but then again I like ballads. Featured watch is the Collins Watch microbrand Bronson. The dial is inspired by analogue audio recording equipment which makes it a perfect companion for a Rudy Van Gelder engineered album
I received this on cassette in 1982 for my 12th birthday! Still kicks ass today as it did back then! We salute you!!!
First run through the Rotel Gear / CM10's and they are dancing to Gorrlilaz "Humans". Brilliant production defies categories. Cosmic dance party, disturbing, soul/ hip hop. Wife out running errands so we rockin. Lotsa hooks
Too much to list! AJ Hobbs' "Sh!t Just Got Real" deserves special mention. And yet this 1976 track by The Supremes has also been a constant ear worm of late.
