I don't know about #1 - it's too hard to choose - but Tchaikovsky's "Romeo and Juliet" overture gets me every time. It's just so perfect and self-contained. Likewise with the "Leb wohl" (I think) from Wotan to Brunnhilde (not that kind of love, but still super intense).
k.d. for me, please. I never could stand the song until I heard her sing it. I have just about everything she's done. Give this one a listen.
