Does the below answer your question, 'how do the vintage Subs get to be so expensive when they aren't rare by any stretch of imagination'?

Answer:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/22100439665...AX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649#ht_5865wt_940

Thank-you.
They claim its a '69, if that's the case it'd be a pre 2.45M serial and meters first, its actually a 2.8 which puts it closer to '71, and the bracelet is not original, circa late 1970s, but the flip-lock on it has grooves which dates it much later, probably mid to late 80s or 90s, so "untouched" is a bit of a stretch, its been polished, dinged, and polished again (then dinged again) the bracelet at least has been replaced in the 80s or so and the serial doesn't match the date claimed.

Thanks for the informed opinion.

So, the watch is misrepresented and yet there are people bidding for it. Aren't they crazy or they believe in whatever the seller, supposedly reputable, claims the watch to be?

Like what was mentioned earlier, it is just beyond belief, as to why there are many, dying to own this type of old Subs, at an unrealistic price. For that price, one could get an excellent condition 18k Constellation 'C' with bracelet or even, just a simple PP which can worn, straightaway.

Thank-you.

Well its a matter of degrees, nothing is massively misrepresented, he's selling a shagged out red-sub and that's what it is.

There are MANY misinformed people in the world who have no idea what a franken or fake is, and won't do their homework before buying. A recognized brand name like Rolex really brings them out of the woodwork. P.T. Barnum made a living off that type of person. 馃榿

A long time ago when I worked on commission a veteran salesperson told me this: "A customer's job is to hold onto their money. A salesperson's job is to take it." The less a customer knows about the product they're buying, the of a good deal they're likely to get. There are plenty of eBay sellers proving that daily.

I not quite sure why the dreaded 'f' word is used in this occa...
Imo, it looks like a 2.8 Mil , feet first red dial....
The patina is kinda custardly and a lot of people go for that style ( personally I prefer the stronger mustard found in asian countries or countries with high humidity....)
This one will probably sell between 8- 9 k with the later but correct 91350 bracelet.....
The 93150 may have been issued by rolex for the watch at a later service as it happens quite often...
On condition thst the dial is. Legit ( hard to tell with the crazed crystal) , this seems like a old honest watch....

On the broader question about the high cost of subbies given the lack of rarity, that's just simply down to demand and supply....
For instance, I have a much, much rarer explorer but the reality is that I would struggle to fetch the same money as a more common DRSD....馃榾

Just making a general point. I couldn't tell you what is or isn't a franken with Rolex unless it's obvious because I have little interest in the brand.

Which is what I don't understand about stainless common watches regardless of the brand - but particularly the vintage Sub variations. They're a good watch but not great, and there's enough of them around, so why do some guys go Cukoo for CocoaPuffs over a "double red"? It just seems silly.

Just to show I'm not biased and a total Omega fanboy, this is part of the reason I haven't bought a Seamaster XVI. There are plenty of them around and I can't justify the price vs relative commonness. Would I like to have one? Sure! But not at the average selling price of even a mediocre example.

While the seamaster XVI is not as uncommon as some other models, to find one all original in good shape is uncommon.

I have several Rolex's, Airking, Date, birthyear Oyster, and the wife has a DJ. I love the workmanship, timeless design, and reliable movements. By no means is it the greatest watch made. Leave that to PP and VC. Love to have a vintage Seadweller or 5513 Sub. though. As for dress watches, I'll wear a vintage IWC, Omega, or Hamilton instead of my TT Date any day of the week.

Like the others already said... Rolex stands for succes, money, and it is and will "always" be a statussymbol!

Rolex is the brand that most people know, it does not mean that Rolex is making the best watches, but the brand is well known!

So it is a mix of everything... good marketing, good products (if the watch was only average, it would not have been successfull like this), and afforfable??

Depends on how you look at it 馃榾

Surprisingly or not surprisingly, for a relatively young brand-name, Rolex is the top-selling watch in the world, today.

Is it the name 'Rolex' or the 'oyster' case or the quality of its movement or the marketing strategy that makes Rolex, popular with the young and old? Do bear in mind, the Cellini belongs to Rolex too but it is struggling to stay above water, as well as remember, popular does not mean best.

Thank-you.
This why! Triologi of my favorite Rolex.

Cool, you have any Omegas too? We've got plenty of Rolex fans here too, I actually wear a 1680 Submariner as my main watch even though I'm an Omega fan
