What is it about the Speedmasters that makes them so popular?

Watching the private sale forum, I see a lot of Speedmasters changed hand, some for incredible amounts of money. Surely it isn't just the aesthetics. But what else? When I look at them, most of the time I go "that's nice but I still prefer a Seamaster". Perhaps I just don't know the history or spot something special. Anyone care to educate?

Thanks. But I'm interested in knowing what makes some of you prefer a Speedmaster to something else like a Seamaster or Constellation.

Aesthetics, history, tradition, function, form, fetish. I think that’ll cover it. Anyone else care to add anything or can we shut this one down boys?

Oh, I think I'll expound on that.....

The massive Speedmaster attraction is easy to explain. At some point in their life, every single young boy wanted to be an astronaut. Speedmasters are the watches of astronauts. So therefore, if you have a Speedmaster, you can be a pseudonaut and vicariously live out your childhood dream while using the excuse that you bought it for it's probable appreciation in value.

(We know you Fan Boys are secretly running around acting like Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong in your NASA Underoos when you think nobody is watching, doing that funny zero-G hop/walk like on the surface of the moon, saying things like "the Eagle has landed" and "one small step for man...." while gazing intently at your 145.022 with the look you used to give your wife before you were married.) 😜

Perhaps the larger question is: Can one like both Speedmasters and Dennis at the same time?

heh, I like them because I am into cars, and think the chrono is useful. I don't really care about the whole Moon aspect of it.

"Shut this one down"... wow, it's been informative. I feel awfully welcome. I apologize in advance if I read the sentiment wrong but this kind of snobbery doesn't really serve anyone any good. Just trying to get to know other members and learn something along the way, I didn't expect this.

I don't think he was being snobbish at all. You're reading too much into his post, as if you're were waiting to be offended.

Perhaps, I work in education/academia and I usually don't take kindly to questions being shut down.

Wait, hang on. Speedmasters went to the moon?!

I bought a few because Denis is always talking crap about them so I figured he was trying to lock the market and buy them all up himself.

You may not realize it, but your OP was like going on a Porsche forum and asking why there are so many 911s.

For me, and this is no joke

Before I discovered this forum,
Before I bought both editions of Moonwatch Only and Omega Journey Through Time
Before I studied speedmaster101 cover to cover and
searched the internet for more and more Speedmaster information.

I stumbled onto this YouTube . As wild as it may seem, watching this 2014 video was where my attraction to Speedmasters began

Relatively accurate comparison. 👍
