A box of thousands of watch hands, not mine, a friend is an enthusiast and I’m looking for some nice blued hands for my omega pocket watch to replace the overly fussy ones. Opened the box and look at what is right on the top, Geiger counter anyone…😁, I’ll pass searching through these

First up is one I'm finishing, a Hamilton 61 based 688. Gorgeous movement that had 1 jewel with a TON of dried...shmoo in it. Currently cleaning the case and waiting on the replacement crystal to arrive, but a fabulous runner after only a few hours of work.

Also, just taking apart a Longines 23Z with a broken stem. The pivots were FITHY on this one, yet it still ran not half-bad, so I'm optimistic. It is currently in the cleaning machine! I might try a touch of work on the dial, as it is a bit dirty too, and has a great texture! This one came with a horrible crystal, but its in the same package as the one above, probably coming next week.

Both of these are from @G___ who gave me a solid deal on both! I'm just glad I'm going to get a good runner out of both of these!

AND one of my NEXT projects, assuming I can get through a few others, is this Rolex 1501 off ebay! My first Rolex project, sold to me as 'has water damage'. Best I can tell, the movement looks water-free, but it still isn't a runner. All that stuff on the case is shmoo, not rust!

I'll have to spend some time on this one, I'll bet it is a bit of a sizable project when I'm done:

Welp, the longines isn't gonna make it sadly :/ The hairspring slipped in the stud a whole bunch in the cleaning machine. My attempts to loosen the pin that held it in place managed to snap the spring.... So this one is sadly into the parts bin.

Damn. Let me encourage you to put it down for a bit and revisit it in due course. Some cheap 23Z movements on eBay, with dials..

Yep, sadly all of the ones I see are either really expensive, or are older ones without shock protection, so finding one that will work is either challenging or expensive :/ I'll put it on my 'list of parts to poke at ebay for every once in a while' though.

Barely counts as watch repair, but like the hack that I am, shimming springbars with electrical tape (the good 3M stuff so it'll last) becuse one lug hole is too small and the new strap (Uncle tropical) demands big chonky bars.

The proper thing to do was either:
1) metal work to enlarge the single lug hole that got a bit mangled over the last 60 years; or

2) sleeve the spring bars with properly sized metal or plastic tubes.

Set the saved search, your shock protected balance for a 23Z will come. Didn't know there were model changes on that.

The hammy looks fantastic and that rlx should be a great challenge !

Here is that Hamilton! The crystal cleaned up nicely, and the more I see it in bright light, the prettier the textured dial is, it's like a fine cotton weave texture.

And another Hamilton I JUST finished up! Crystal has a mark inside at about 230 I couldn't clean up, otherwise its pretty cool! A bit small, but great lugs

A quick tear down today, as I realized I needed a reamer for my Rolex project, so I popped this Omax on my desk today. An absolutely silly looking watch, that I love 😁 17 jewel Bifora 91 movement! Interesting how cheaply it was made despite being 17 jewels, but a quick tear down. It'll get a quick clean and reassembly and hopefully run a little better for the next while.

I picked this up (Elgin Jitterbug!) a while ago with the intent of servicing it! It arrived without a crystal which I've since replaced. The movement works great, but is a little 'sticky' it seems, so this cleaning will be helpful.

The 'neat' part about this is 2 fold:
1: it runs at 108k bph!
2: it is less of a stop watch, and more like a chronograph watch without hands. The pocketwatch runs (loudly!) even when the stopwatch is stopped!

Side note: ANYONE know of any timegrapher options for something like this? The app I have on my phone maxes out at 57600!

Put my new acquisition on the grapher. People always tell you runs great.

Ooof!

And yes, I've purchased quite a few watches (with the intent of using as a project) that I was told 'runs great' just to see similar numbers. It always makes me laugh to see a dealer on reddit/etc list a watch as "runs great, right on time!" with a timegrapher photo that shows 0s/d, but 150 amp 😁

I actually found one and installed it! Sadly, it has a fixed stud, and ~3ms beat error, so I have to remove the balance a few times to get it better. Sadly, that is probably how I ruin the most hairsprings, so I'll need luck D:

Plus, I now have to track down a fine needle to open the regulator, I've never had luck with this style of regulators.

You're braver with the tools than I, good luck!
