Watches and insurance during shipping // Solution!!

Just registered an account on the website. Took a look at the dashboard, "insure a package" requires the carrier info and shipping tracking number, that means, the insurance could only be purchased after the item is shipped?

Another question, would the original sales invoice of a watch (which has been through multiple owners) be considered as a valid commercial invoice?

Hello ,

You can insure your package once you have the tracking number ready. You must insure it on the very same day of departure ( until midnight ).
A sales invoice is exactly what is needed to refund your package. In case you sell your watch to a collector , then you will have to write down a certificate of sale. ( Amount , Item , Who from , Who too , Signature )

Thanks for the clarification! I would certainly try the insurance out next when I ship a watch!

One other thing to be aware of is precious metals. I tried to send a Victorian silver medal to Australia Insured, Royal Mail, UPS, DHL, nobody would insure it because it contained precious metal (they also wouldn't deliver to a PO box). That never stopped them selling me the insurance though, until I specifically mentioned the issue.

I was given the number of a specialist insurer to contact, he said they wouldn't insure it, I asked what people do as there must always be packages like this travelling back and forward, he said they are sent uninsured! I wonder how many of the senders know of these exclusions when they send. The buyer kept asking me to send it UPS as then it would be insured, he couldn't get that even if I bought insurance it wouldn't be valid.

I presume watches would be caught by the precious metal clause?

Precious metal watches are no different to insure than any others if you are using a reputable insurer.

Hi Valentin, when selling through eBay, will the Paypal invoice also do?

Of course. Any commercial invoice will work , as long as it shows the amount and nature of the item.

I used them and didn't have any problems with the service.

But I'm wondering if there is anybody here on OF, who needed to get a refund because of a stolen/lost package and could share his experience?

I would like to see where it is written that UPS does not cover watches. I have been told by very senior UPS employees that their insurance covers watches.

Always best to read the contract and not rely on what someone told you. The limit is $1000, this is standard throughout the industry.

BTW watches are not jewelry.

Maybe to you they aren't, but to those insuring the contents they are classified as jewelry.

This was a senior account rep. I was employed there for 30 years.

not sure why this has any bearing...but watches are classified along with jewelry and jewelry has limitations.
Parcel Pro is now owned by UPS, and was originally created specifically for collectors and dealers of jewelry and watches, which is lacking in both FedEx and UPS standard coverage.

Not to mention it cost far less than shipping and insuring with UPS directly...im not sure why anyone would use Fedex or UPS insurance regardless of the fact that coverage is limited.

I can absolutely assure you UPS does insure watches and jewelry. Just because it is not available at the retail level does not mean UPS does not do it. UPS negotiates individual contracts with companies with separate terms. Two I can remember just off the top of my head are Patek Phillipe and Breitling. I have personally delivered Breitling watches, insured through UPS, to a retailer and a high value insured Patek strap or bracelet to an individual. I have personally received watches from an Omega boutique from UPS, but have no idea if they were insured and if so by whom. I know for a fact Breitling and Patek at one time used UPS, insured them with UPS insurance, and the value was more than $5000. Parcel Pro is not the only insurance one can use for jewelry.

But you can not use this service as a private person. Result from a hotline discussion with UPS today.

Again, this has no bearing on this discussion. And yes, there is absolutely no doubt that Parcel Pro is not the only option....there are many options.
We are discussing individual Collectors shipping a single watch utilizing the default UPS or Fedex insurance available to the public...not a pre-negotiated large scope plan individually crafted for a company like Patek Phillipe and Breitling. Sure, we can all apply for this...but unless you are a dealer this is not a viable option, and must be set up far in advance of any shipping.

Just replying to the OP I thought.
“As you may know , all carriers have excluded vintage and collector items from their insurance policy.

Fedex maximum is 1000$ maximum while DHL , Ups and others have completely banned watches from coverage. You better read carefully the condition terms!!”
