Watch Hierarchy Pyramid

Hello everyone, watch newb here. I have been trying to understand the whole watch hierarchy and have been looking at several pyramids from google searches and forums. I was wondering what everyone's thoughts are about this one if it is reasonably accurate. This pic came off of the Rolex forums by a member named Powerfunk. Thoughts?

looks like more of a cost pyramid than anything else. Hubot lumped in with IWC and Zenith is the tip off.

I know this is pretty much all subjective but I am curious, and thank you Janice&Fred for the feedback. In your opinion do you think Hublot should be knocked down a tier or up?

I think if one was going to make a pyramid, no matter how subjective that is, it should not be based on or include entries merely by cost factor. There are some bizarre groupings in that example posted. JLC with Piaget and Credor?

Is that what the creator did? This is more based on cost?

@janice&fred makes some good points, especially regarding msrp's and the factor weight the designer of this pyramid seems to give them. It could serve as a rough guide, I suppose, but it's certainly not gospel and almost every watch enthusiast I know would have issue with some of the groupings. (My personal first raised eyebrow was how low Oris has been placed, when I find they make a beautiful product in most cases.)

As you research, even prior to purchase, it might help you begin to develop your own personal hierarchy, which I find most collectors in all areas have (Fords always over Chevys, Colts over Smith & Wessons, etc). An important question to ask yourself is: what is YOUR criteria for ranking a watch? Durability? Original as-new MSRP? Current value? Likelihood of retaining value, especially for pre-owned pieces? The aesthetics? The type of movement? (I have one friend who refuses to own anything Quartz, another who would turn down a Patek if it was a traditional manual-wind, for examples)

What is the most important factor/s to you, personally? Then research from those and go from there.

I understand. I guess I will have to get more familiar with watches and do some more research before I can start to rank watches myself. Before coming on this webpage I didnt even know 95% of the watch companies even existed and I thought Rolex was ranked the highest (I guess that speaks for Rolex's marketing team lol)

Just ... nope.

I esteem and aspire to the watches that speak to me and that interest is primarily centered in vintage examples.

Never could be concerned about watch brand pecking order and watch brand pyramids.

Welcome to the forum, and many of us applaud you for being curious. Many will also brutalize you (and one-another) for being naive.

Bare in mind that preferences and views about watches are like anything else, including politics, vehicles (as @kip595 alludes), restaurants, or significant others: there is an ass for every seat, and there are a lot of seats around here.

Generally speaking these pyramids are a bit goofy and not too helpful, but I guess it's a starting point if you don't know much about watches. Here is another thread about a different pyramid, with assorted comments from members.

Thanks Dan S for your reply, just from skimming over that post it looks like a very interesting read. I am going to get started.

How and where did the "hate" idea come from? Oh wait I see who was responsible for planting that seed. Anyways you asked for people's thoughts on the pyramid you posted and got them. 😁
