Only on OF will you hear this.
Or from Rolex themselves as to who is their biggest competitor, and basically every watch review site on the planet... Oh and watch magazines... and youtubers... and on WUS, and even on TRF... Oh I forgot AD's, Used watch Online retailers... Rolex specialist resellers on the web.....

so there is that....

Regular models generally depreciate, like almost every other consumer item. Some limited edition models hold their value, but not all of them.

And OP, for the same reasons, you don't always have to pay MSRP to acquire an Omega in the first instance.

Again, just imagine you're talking about a subject you do know about, and watches will not behave much differently: perhaps it's cars? At the moment, Rolex are a bit like Jeep Wranglers (because of demand volume, they tend to hold their "lot" value well, but whether that is true and how true also depends on exactly which model and options are on the vehicle) so purchasing at MSRP/new off the lot is not a bad idea; conversely, Ford Explorers depreciate significantly in their first year off the lot (but again, also depending on exact model/options), which is why finding a very low mileage unit from just last year can be a good idea.

So which is better, a Jeep Wrangler, or a Ford Explorer?

Nothing about the above information on pricing trends alone can really tell you whether you want a Jeep Wrangler or a Ford Explorer.

I understand, the first (and only so far) nice watch I purchased was an Omega Speedmaster LE. I didn't buy it new, but it was in mint condition and looked brand new for a watch that was from 2009. I will probably never buy any of the watches mentioned new. I found that I am more of a pre-owned kinda guy when it comes to watches.

I did the whole car thing back when I was younger. Bought it brand new, supped it up etc. spent as much money on it as buying a new one, see I loved to race but i realized very quickly that you will never get what you put into it back. So only used for me.

Hello everyone, watch newb here. I have been trying to understand the whole watch hierarchy and have been looking at several pyramids from google searches and forums. I was wondering what everyone's thoughts are about this one if it is reasonably accurate. This pic came off of the Rolex forums by a member named Powerfunk. Thoughts?
Updated: (and this one is accurate)

I would definitely like a few different watches, especially since I ordered a nice 6 compartment custom watch box. It should be here March 18th, I will definitely post some pics. 😁

I think you've weathered the hazing of "basic training" in this one thread.

Ya' really should have ordered four or five of those six-compartment custom watch boxes though, 'cause ya' gonna need 'em.

Haha yes It does get addicting just like my car hobby back in my late teens. I guess ya go from one expensive hobby to another lol. 😁

I'm not as knowledgeable as most of you so I dont know why you would think that, especially seeking attention in a online watch forum of all places. I am definitely not that starved for attention as some in here. I wont name any names. I am simply asking questions, but I do appreciate your feedback.
When I got into this, I looked at all these pyramids too. Its a good way to dial into to the hobby. Don’t sweat the trolls but do look at contributions to watchmaking over time from these brands and the dearly departed, like Universal Geneve, and the pyramid changes. Heritage matters too. Brands like JLC also get punished for producing a broad line at multiple price points. Their high end is right up there with the best.

I appreciate it Larry S. Thank you for the info.

RGM?
In my opinion ......Mid to Upper Mid depending on the level of price point, vertical integration, level of finish and complexity. I think that’s where most of the small independents would fall as well ...

Agreed. I thought it was an oversight leaving them off the list, or at least making an allowance for them and similar companies. The only small companies listed were the ones all the way at the top.

Agreed. Just look at the Master Grande Traditional Gyrotourbillon. Other brands wish they could produce something similar.

Lets not forget how many JLC movements are in high end legend pieces.

At MSRP, I think Omega and Rolex flagship watches are priced right where they belong:
About $8k for a Submariner vs about $5k for Seamaster diver
About $13k for a Daytona vs about $5k for a Speedmaster Professional
I love all four VERY much but if I could only own one watch between Omega and Rolex, I would pick a Rolex and so would a vast majority of the editors, youtubers, ADs, collectors, specialists and what have you that you mentioned above.

no actually due to what is known as the Rolex dilemma that eventually you will understand.

Hmmm ... I thought it could be the pyramid for average / overall depreciation after a few years ::facepalm1::
