Congratulations! Is it matte black or glossy?
Its glossy and thats quite common to see Suverän dials that remains glossy after 80 years. But I don’t actually know if some dials acutally was more matte originaly or if all dials was glossy and just lost it to the test of time

The glossy dials are stable and remain so. The semi-matte black dials invariably deteriorate to varying degrees.

Do you mean some dials was glossy black originally and some was matte?

Compare the latest I posted to this one I owned a while ago that definitely looks matte.

yes, I am quite certain. See these three black dials of mine: the 2639 is by far the oldest, from 1951, yet with a pristine glossy dial, while the 2852 and 2846 from 1957 and 1958 have visibly degraded matte dials.

Yes, I agree. You can see the contrast between the two surfaces very clearly on my Constellation 14393 which has a glossy black outer ring, which is in nearly perfect condition, and the matte black center which shows significant patina, but visible only at certain angles. It’s quite visible in the first photo and virtually invisible in the second photo.

Yes I agree, but I also have seen some glossy black dials that have degraded. Usually its the laquer that cracks or deteriorates, matte dials dont seem to have the same kind of protection laquer that glossy does.
Here is a Longines dial from early 40s that is glossy black with a laquer thats starting to crack (only seen in some lights and angles)

And a late 50s 14700 that is as glossy as it gets

IMO, when it comes to black vintage dials, waffle dials and hobnail dials are the best of the best.

I tend to agree with you, particularly after admiring many of these posted on OF but I make two general comments.

First, all the waffles and hobnails seem to originate in the fifties and early sixties. I originally collected from that era but there seem to be far fewer in the late sixties, early seventies where my interest has moved, although I am happy to stand corrected.

Second, the dials of quite a few of the Omegas from the fifties/sixties seem to deteriorate (or patinate, if you prefer) in a way that doesn’t seem to affect dials on some other brand dials (black or silver) of that sort of age. I’m thinking primarily of Longines and Certina, but there obviously others.

Of course, I accept that OF members generally post superb examples which, if they were typical, would refute my perception.

My Doxa chronograph from 1943, bought new by my father in 1945 .. that I received later ..

And an basic Hamilton that I consider a very nice example of a vintage look dial, well balanced .. perfect !
