In this hobby, you never know what will spark a quest. In this case, a 1956 advertisement for the Tissot Futura ("Wear it forever without winding") started the chase:

The name "futura" never appears on the dial, which just added to the challenge of identifying the right model. It took me a while to find a wearable example, but the balance spring was shot and crown was missing, so a second parts watch had to be tracked down. It's a good thing the watch can be worn forever, because that "thinner sleeker automatic with the invisible crown" is a challenge to wind. Even so, I have found I'm quite fond of the no-crown look.

The white dial version seen in the ad is easier to find, but the black dial version seems to be scarce:
Nice story and watch.

Nice story and watch

Thanks! This particular reference is hard to find but relatively anonymous - and therefore inexpensive to obtain - without the discovery of the model's name in the advertisement or knowledge of the hidden crown (trendy for 1956) that make it interesting to the collector. As my watchmaker and I worked to repair the watch, I also discovered that this particular reference was unique in that it did not use an in-house Tissot caliber but instead relied upon a Lemania 23.3R-21 automatic for that "thinner sleeker" shape. For those who are new to vintage watches, I hope the story shows how you can have lots of fun in the hobby without spending much money.

Mid 1930's Gruen with probably an old refinish. Great style with period bracelet I found for it.
