··His Holiness Puer SurdusBTW, the images in the seller's thread appear to me as modified; much of that fuzziness was post-processed IMHO. The original pictures were probably crystal clear.
The biggest giveaway that the dial is refinished is that the figures have lost their sharpness. They are not removable on this style of dial so they are nearly always polished to some degree when the dial is refinished.
I commented on the original FS thread and received some friendly pm's from the seller who persisted in trying to persuade me that the dial was genuine as a) he has seen the reverse configuration, I.e. dials with no Ts that have lume (obviously there are genuine dials in that configuration) and b) he showed the clear fantasy redial (shown here on a previous page) as a similar example.
What's worse is that the watch is now listed on eBay in open auction as having "factory black dial, never repainted or redone".
Regarding the second point, I don't see the problem in commenting on sales threads. I get it's not a democracy here but it is a discussion forum so I assume we can discuss the fact we don't agree with it?
I've sold various watches and parts here and welcome any comments, positive or negative. In fact in some of my threads I've said "feel free to comment if I've made a mistake etc". This is my hobby, I enjoy it and enjoy conversing with others about the minutiae of vintage watches. When I sell it's sometimes at a profit and sometimes at a loss, but my driver is a smooth transaction and working with other collectors. I don't want the bad joo joo of selling someone a dud so I'd rather know if I'm inadvertently selling a redial/franken/overpriced price of shit etc.
I think most collectors think the same. The only ones I could imagine disagreeing are the less than honest dealers and quite frankly, who cares about their feelings on a collectors discussion board???
Cannot believe that this listing got that amount of likes without any remarks directly in the topic.
...link it as a comment in the sales thread...
This (great) discussion is in another thread. Is it not possible to link it as a comment in the sales thread without being smacked on the knuckles?
But the question still is. Does OF, because of it's educational (among other) purpose, has the obligation to raise questions if it sees watches in the private sales that are questionable (or just plain wrong)? People here are trying daily to warn other people for making mistakes. It would be strange if the experts here have to start a new thread without having the opportunity to comment in the original sales thread. It's likely that a potential buyer will miss this. As long as it's done in a respectfull manner with good, strong arguments I dont see anything wrong with it. It will make this forum stronger. How often do I see members saying: "start in the private sales" to relative new collectors or first buyers. That has to do with social control. We're saying to new omega buyers: OF got your back... But that's only possible if OF is completely transparant.
Damn, I'm a moral dickhead...
