I bought this watch as I intend to gift it for my wife. I do not have much details about how this watch mechanism works or what movement inside, and the history of this watch may be one of a ton of models that were sold in the 70s. what do you think ?

Check the under side of the bracelet. This watch is gold plated, and over time, the plating on the under side of the bracelet disappears in patches, exposing the brass substrate. When that happens, rough edges of the plating occur as the brass corrodes away. The wrist of the wearer turns green! As far as the operation of the watch is concerned, these self-winders are dependant on the wearing patterns of the wearer. Now that you own it, I wish you luck with your purchase. When the bracelet craters, no other bracelet will fit the watch.

The printing on the buckle might say 9, 10, or 14 karat, but I think I can see the word MICRON. That means the watch is only gold plated, not karat gold. The finish on the under side of the bracelet is sadly very deteriorated, leaving patches of the original plated finish, but also voids in the plating where the brass has seriously corroded away. In addition, the hinges in the links are quite worn. I think you paid the “newbie” tax on this one. If the lady knows you bought it, it is too late. But if she doesn’t know you bought it, I suggest you stick in your sock drawer, and look for a better example. This watch would not be comfortable to wear, and it will turn the wrist green. Don’t consider having it plated as that will only be temporary. This watch has a lot of miles on it. I have given you a run down on what can be seen externally, and I’ll bet there is a plethora of ills with the mechanism, as well. Basically, you bought someone else’s problem.

Thank you so much for educating me on this. I paid $140 for it and may need to return it, as the seller accepts the returns without issue. The only dilemma here is if I return it, I will pay maybe $35 for return delivery to the seller, and I already paid $35 for delivery for one, so the total delivery loss will be $75. If you were in my place, what would you advise?

I am unable to be of much help as to what would I do. I wouldn’t have bought it in the first place, knowing what I know of gold plated watches! If you return it, you’re out $70.00 for postage both ways. If you keep it, you’re out $140.00. What to do? Seems clear to me. I think it would be cheaper for you to return it. But I’d start out by not giving it to the lady, and possibly recovering at least some of the purchase price by selling it to someone else. Before you venture on and buy something else, maybe consider showing it here for advice. Sorry for your dilemma, but this often happens when you buy blind!

I noticed now the seller offer 30 days free return if changed mind, which I confirm this with him, once again, thank you.

If you return it, you’re out the purchase price ($140.00), plus $70.00 for postage both ways. Total of $210.00. If you keep it, you’re only out $140.00. What to do? Seems clear to me. Please note. I edited that post. If you return it and get your money back, you’re only out the $70.00 return postage. Keep it and you’re out $140.00 plus postage, one way. Seems clear to me. Send it back. Investigate before you invest!

Many thanks. I just looked at the dial, and I thought it was clean, authentic and that would be enough. To be honest, I don't know much about gold watches or gold in general (my mistake). I thought the vendor sustain offering decent merchandise. He was good the last time I dealt with him for another watch. I will follow your advise.

That watch is only gold colour! Not gold. There might be one gram of gold on the watch and bracelet. With gold at over $3,200 US per ounce, you wouldn’t be able to buy a gold watch for $140! More likely $1,400! And at that price, you’d likely not get a gold bracelet. Check the FOR SALE sections of this message board for an idea of styles, and prices, to gain some perspective on what you’ll need to pay. You don’t have enough posts on this message board to permit you to buy, here (you need 200 posts), but you might consider sending a private message to the seller to see if you can work something out. If you had shown us pictures of the subject watch before you bought it, you’d likely have been advised to avoid it. You paid a “newbie tax”.

I understand now, and it is fairly clear. I plan to continue blogging until I am able to purchase from here. I believe this is far more trustworthy. I will also post interested watches before buy or even interested to know the history behind certain watch.
