The Watch You Wear To Impress Non-Watch People?

Slap on a ROO, and call it a day. You can spot a guy wearing this from miles away. It is huge & shiny, a beacon in the sea of plain looking watches. The finishing is actually quite superb. And if anyone ever dare to ask what kind of moolah, just tell them it is the cost of a small house.

I only try to impress myself. I purchase and wear watches I like. I travel abroad frequently if I wear an expensive watch I will check that in at the hotel front desk and ask them to put it in the safe. The only people I ever noticed checking out a watch that I am wearing was either a crook or an attorney.
Some attorneys when they really do not know you and you meet with them. I always notice they give you a wrist check. They are usually schumks trying to figure out how much they can jack up the legal fees.

One time I was wearing a Parmigiani the attorney mentioned nice watch what is it I told him a $35 dollar knock off. I mentioned That I purchased the watch at a local gas station that had a convenience store. The attorney was a piece of work my wife an I went to have are will amended.

His first question was is your estate more than a million or less than a million. At that point I reached in my pocket and pulled out some small bills and counted the money and replied less than a million. My wife kicked me and said cut it out. Needless to say we did not retain that attorney.

I say lean on every crutch you have...which includes [but is not limited to] Metallica t-shirts, camo cargo shorts...AND big ass railroad grade watches [18s 21j Illinois A. Lincoln c. 1910 pictured below]. 👍

Of course there is one more thing you could do to turn the trick 😗

In my opinion the only sort of watches that impress non-watch people are the sort of watches that watch-people usually do not want to own. Large, brash and shiny. Maybe even with a flashing light so that no-one can miss seeing that you are wearing something on your wrist.

I don't think a Hooters girl is going to be impressed with a watch unless it's a part of a big tip.

Or being worn on the end of a big tip

99.9% of the people in a social situation don't have a clue about watches and could not pick out a automatic vs. quartz. As far as names, aside from Rolex, they would not be able to tell you if a Vacheron Constantin is better than a Seiko. Forget vintage, 99.999999% have absolutely no clue there. Moral of the story, wear what you enjoy and what matches your tie or socks!

Agreed and I just wear what I feel like.... but had the bizarre experience of having a business meeting in a cafe and having the waiter compliment me on my tv dial speedy (ok, it was a 125, but nonetheless)

Easy: I wear this one when my buddy here will lend it...which isn't often. And before you ask - no, the crown doesn't get lent at all. It's from the Harry Winston Burger King collection.

Outside of "watch people", I try not to talk about watches. You see, if I start, you're just not going to get me to stop ... and then everyone ends up bored stiff. So, it would probably be this ....

One of the only comments I have ever gotten from a non-watch enthusiast about my watch was at a company dinner where the woman sitting next to me asked why I was wearing a womens watch. I was wearing a plain Omega cal. 267.

I usually wear my Speedy at meetings but only so I can look through the Thomas Preik sapphire caseback when I get bored.

At one meeting a couple of weeks ago I had removed my Speedy during a pretty boring presentation and was holding it in my hand watching the movement. The "older" woman next to me asked if it was an old watch. I replied that it was from 1985. She said that it made sense since they didn't make these anymore. And by these she meant mechanical watches. I told her that mechanical watches was still being made and she just replied "are you sure?". Then somebody hushed at us and I shut up.

I get more comments on my Seiko diver than anything else by far. I can't think of even one time anyone commented on my speedmaster. C'est la vie.

AP, Patek, or gold Rolex if looking to impress.
My wife and I wore matched Ladies and Gents Patek Nautilus every day for decades.
Several of my customers would comment that they were surprised we didn't wear Rolex.
We always told them that a pair of Rolex were too expensive for us 😉

Come to think of it, I cannot remember the last time someone commented on one of my watches.

When I lived in DC and was very social, I never had anyone notice my watches, with the exception of a beautiful Persian girl at a museum gala who was dripping in Van Cleef & Arpels...she noticed my ROO.

My daily wearer was a Rolex GMT for a number of years and only watch fans comment on it - that and clothing salesmen at higher end stores (although I also suspect that others notice but don't mention for various reasons as it's a Rolex). Panerai are the watches I've most seen non-watch folk comment on (a friend from work wears one).

I prefer to wear my more recently acquired JLC MUT Moon - nobody notices it but me 😀.
