The Watch You Wear To Impress Non-Watch People?

It is true that you should not lean on a crutch such as a nice watch - you should "let your personality shine" - but every little bit of help counts, which is why we comb our hair, press our clothes, and yes, choose a good watch to wear?

I'm curious to hear @Mad Dog 's response to this question.

My Sinn 903 as it's a "Navitimer" and the watch is iconic with years of marketing.

While I don't own one. Any oyster case with a cyclops is going to stand out to anyone as a Rolex and that's basically the only thing that impresses non watch people. My GF before she got into watches tried on a Patek Grand Complication and had no idea it was a 500k watch. In its defense part of the charm is that it looks so simple.
I'm going to agree with this. Particularly a Rolex with a fluted bezel - i.e. Datejust or Day Date - because it's a Rolex.

Other than the 2, the only one in my experience that will impress civilians is a Cartier Santos - because its a Cartier

I don't think a Hooters girl is going to be impressed with a watch unless it's a part of a big tip.

Too many nice watches to pick from as most of my collection is three hand dress watches. Find these ones gets a bit of cred when noticed, but never go out of my way to pick anything for anyone else but myself. ( close friends expect a recent purchase or something they haven't seen and usually ask throughout the night )

@STANDY, when do you get to wear them? Aren't you almost always in a hostile environment?

(Technically on topic as OP's party sounds a bit hostile 😁 )

I honestly hope I am never in a social situation where I feel it is important socially for me to wear a certain type of watch. The one watch people would most like notice/ comment on/ admire is an Apple watch, and I sure as heck do not seek out people who are Apple product fans 😁

Thankfully I have made it over 50 years without my watch being important in a social situation. I'm aiming for at least 35 more.

99.9% of the people in a social situation don't have a clue about watches and could not pick out a automatic vs. quartz. As far as names, aside from Rolex, they would not be able to tell you if a Vacheron Constantin is better than a Seiko. Forget vintage, 99.999999% have absolutely no clue there. Moral of the story, wear what you enjoy and what matches your tie or socks!

This is a good point. Frankly, you're probably better off pouring the money into a bespoke suit and shoes if you're really looking to make an impression with the folks you're meeting with. Most non-watch people won't look twice at your wrist.

If I hadn't of already sold it to my best friend, my old Air King. People always commented on it, and most were shocked to learn it was a Rolex.

They just liked the simple and clean lines.

I stopped caring many moons ago, but I do stress over which watch will make me happiest in which occasion.

Isn't it funny how non-watch people gravitate to such random watches?

I find the watch that I own that gets the most attention is my SARB033. For whatever reason, people seem to love it from a distance. Once I show it to them up close, of course, the normal reaction is: "Oh... it's a Seiko." Imagine a disappointed tone...

Always kind of funny to me as they just proved twice in less than a minute that they know nothing about watches...

If I am in a more formal situation, I wear my Reverso or my Nomos Orion. They are both classy and quiet enough, but not quite interesting enough to attract any significant attention. I don't like talking to most people.

Crocodiles don't give a shit what I am wearing ( would loose a arm no matter what watch I'm wearing )

Work wise I get a buisness class flight, office day or meeting every now and then plus the 3 times a year we go to the city for dinner......

But your right ! I wish I had a shirt cuff everytime I hear you guys talking about watches fitting under them 🙁

I say lean on every crutch you have...which includes [but is not limited to] Metallica t-shirts, camo cargo shorts...AND big ass railroad grade watches [18s 21j Illinois A. Lincoln c. 1910 pictured below]. 👍

I work around a lot of people who are younger than me, most of whom never seem to wear a watch.
'Cool watch. Is that an Apple....'

Fortunately I've never been in such a situation. I wear a watch for personal gratification.

Depending on where you lurk, be it intentional or happenchance, will depend on who will notice what you're wearing/showing off. And as others have said, non watch enthusiasts won't notice/care anyway. If I'm in a situation where there's a pissing contest going on I'd hide the watch, under a cuff, cause I can't be arsed with pathetic one-upmanship games. Subtlety and modesty is far cooler than the 'look at me' idiots of the world.

Reminds me of the classic Eurostar scene in Casino Royale when Bond and Vesper first meet. Bond could easily flash his wrist during this scene of massive flirtation, yet he (and the film crew) chooses to hide his Omega for the whole scene. She's attracted to him and assumes he wears an expensive watch, yet when he reveals the brand (she wonders if he possibly wears a Rolex) he still doesn't flash his wrist to reveal his SMP. Ok, Bond is fictional but the scriptwriters and actors got this spot on. Subtle product placement too (and it's barely even seen). Be like Bond ☺

The most compliments I ever got was for an Invicta. As a result, I just wear what I like.

Funny you say that, I was once browsing around the Rolex section of a Goldsmiths store; the shop assistant clocked my wrist and asked me I was looking for another to compliment the one I was wearing. Mine too was an Invicta
