Shipping from UK to Germany - Help please!!

Hi all, Some guidance needed please. I need to ship a watch from here in the UK to Germany. The value would be £4,500. This is not something I have undertaken before (UK shipments only). I have been looking at DHL who appear to provide insurance at extra cost. Does anyone have any recommendations based on experience? Much appreciated.

It depends on the value. How much is the insurance for?

I would be wary of using any courier insurance unless you check their conditions very carefully.

In my experience FedEx are very reliable.

As Chris stated make sure to check terms carefully, some items are covered others not.

Not sure how it is in the UK, but in Germany, watches are NOT covered by any insurance of DHL. Even if you pay DHL for a higher insurance than 500 Euros (the normal insurance of their packages), watches and other valuables are not covered.

Just posted from UK to Denmark a watch £690 sale price. Postage £72 insured via Royal Mail Parcel Pro service.
£4500 value is putting you in the range of what Briandrain said and fly over there.
Tons of flights to Germany, they can meet you at the airport and you return next flight.

Personally, I would trust Royal mail International Priority tracked and signed for service.
I have sent numerous watches with them to all over the world without a problem.
I wouldn't bother with insurance, but I can understand if you would be worried if this is your first time shipping a valuable watch.

I insure separately with Secursus. They charge 0.6% of the value, in this instance £27.

Thanks all for your responses. Very much appreciated. Taking everything in to account I have opened a Secursus account and should be ready for Monday for shipping.

I’ve always found DHL to be good and I believe their insurance does cover watches. Only up to 4K though from memory.

From my experience, Royal Mail wouldn’t touch watches at all internationally via parcel force

That is only partly true. When sending nationally you are basically not allowed to send watches with a value of more than 500 €. Internationally is different and you are allowed to send watches with a value of up to 25000 €. However as far as I recognize you can only insure the watch up to a value of around 5000 € via DHL...

Like others have said, I'd get a Ryanair flight for 20 quid and deliver it personally.

After you took the time to reply to my post I thought I would say that all went well. Sent with Parcel Force and Secursus insurance. Arrived in Germany nice and safe😀
