The watch in question is $18000 USD, shipping from Australia to Europe. Looking around and to be fully insured it's going to cost about $800! I must be doing something wrong, which courier do you guys use?

Thanks in advance!

I'm speaking out of turn since I am in the US. But registered mail may be an option.

Fedex.

When I declare the full value to Fedex, the price jumps to $700aud, that's not even fully insured.

Not sure if is available in Australia but worth checking it out.

Thanks will have a look now.

Will have another look, Auspost here has a max insurance value of $5K!

Had a look, DHL charge 2.5% of the item, so $540aud, plus $105 to ship. This seems pretty standard for couriers.

Here is an example of a company that ships and insures high value watches, etc.
https://www.ferrarigroup.net/

You may want to search for an equivalent company available in your area.

You can fly round trip from Sydney to Frankfurt for less than $1K - maybe that would be a better option?

You can buy shipping insurance seperately from independent insurance companies. You should be able to get something better than 4,45%.

I just got shipping insurance for 1,6% which is still costly, but significantly better.

Try transurit.com. They are US based and you鈥檒l need to set up an account. They offer Fedex shipping and insurance targeted at watches/jewelry. They offer wholesale for both in the US and I鈥檝e used them to ship internationally - but not yet from Oz. Drop them a line and ask for a quote.

I love this idea!! Pack up the Mrs. and make it a mini-vacation. If you鈥檙e not strapped for the cash, it could make for a fun adventure. Just make sure you don鈥檛 swing by any watch shops while you鈥檙e there or you鈥檒l blow all your booty.
Oh, and wear the watch there- it鈥檚 personal property then.

They are simply BAD 馃憥 Last time I've got a watch through them - they didn't communicate the tracking, telling it's kept secret for security reasons, and the only thing they did in fact was subcontracting UPS :whipped: - I've found the parcel at my front house door, on the floor. Nobody signed for it and the UPS shipping slip was on the package. 馃が

For insurance check out

https://www.secursus.com/

They charge 0.6% of the value and are based in France.

Setting up an account is easy.

I've used them for all my watch purchases and sales for over 12 months but have yet to make a claim. I can't tell you how good they are in this regard.

Besides the shipping and insurance costs, make sure you take the import tax into account if you're bringing in something from outside the EU.

I find these discussions fascinating. Willing to risk an $18K loss to avoid an $800 bill for insured shipping and tariffs.

I'm all about wearing both belt and braces, but why pay 800 if you can get the exact same product for 100?

Because that鈥檚 not a real number for a proper job.
