In my opinion, it is really not okay to cancel an auction after the fact, only when the selling price does not meet expectations. it is honestly, also about the principle.
Maybe, but that and $7 might get you coffee at Starbucks.

Because eBay has separate agreements with both buyer and seller, you are buying the watch from eBay, not the seller. eBay probably has actions they can take against the seller under their separate agreement, but it’s unlikely they will do so, as that could cost them future revenue from that seller.

“Principles” in auctions generally don’t exist. Never have and never will.

Caveat emptor.

I'm trying to see if eBay can do something about this but I'm not optimistic.
Still worth complaining to ebay. Make sure they know the seller admitted to cancelling without a valid reason so they will charge the full selling fee. Send emails and call them. Effect his profit.

eBay will make their own investigation. Seller will claim that watch was broken or some other excuse and eBay will buy it. Potential buyer has no say in the matter.

Constellation Deluxe piepan in 18K gold, Ref 2799, Cal 354 bumper automatic, Hess don't cancel their listings if they don't meet the price they want from my experience. It has been polished and isn't as clean as some of the previous ones.

Depends. Last year I won an auction for the $300 opening bid. Seller canceled and messaged me saying it was too low a price. I complained to ebay and they said the seller reported the item as damaged. When I told them the seller admitted it was a price issue they said they would review the messages between us. About a week later I got a message from the seller asking me to agree that we mutually cancelled the sale as ebay was charging him the full selling fee. I just ignored him. I think ebay is a bit more thorough when it's in their interest.

This one is labeled as a 2967-5 which is a ladies model but it looks more like a 2937-5 with the cal 267. Not a terrible price if that's the case.
In the last picture it looks like there might be a chip in the caseback?

All depends on how much business the seller does with eBay. They are no different than any other business.
Special people get to do special things.

That watch is a redial. Those fonts are way too early for a watch of that age.

Geneve 166.041 with later non-applied dial variant on BoR, terrible photos and scratched crystal which may keep the price low, these are a nice value entry piece

Just re-posting this 2799 Constellation Deluxe as it got buried rather quickly behind a discussion. There are actually quite a lot of deluxes listed at the moment but most are in very rough condition, this one is polished but still attractive.

This one is now above 4K, which I think is a bit much and I wouldn’t be bidding further on it but I will still watch it with interest to see where it ends

Hmm, full set, rose gold, silver box, watch in nice condition. It's not a JUB and it seems to have idiot-trying-to-open marks on the caseback, but I'd still expect it to go higher than 5K.... I've been wrong before, though....😀

Yea maybe I was being a bit too harsh on the condition, the marks bothered me a bit and the dial looked a bit dirty but it could just be the crystal
