Agree, it is awsome but don't believe everything you read.on here. For goods bought into the UK, the EU apart, the customs rates are the same as they were for many, many years before the UK left the EU.
I think the point that was being made is that whereas pre-Brexit you could bring things into the UK from the EU without paying duty, now you do pay it. That means that realised eBay prices for items originating in the EU are no longer what you actually pay.

As an aside, I believe UK prices have inflated as a result of this because the UK is now something of a closed market (ironic, given the promises made by Brexiters about free trade opportunities, but I don't want to get into a political discussion here), many collectors are slightly reluctant to buy from overseas, putting upward pressure on watches being sold in the UK.

Certainly plausible. I was always wary of buying bike components from the US because of import tax, used to buy a lot from France but that stings now post Brexit. I was selling some nice bits last year and had a sale cancelled when the German buyer realised I was a UK seller. Maybe it cancels out - less foreign buyers vs more limited supply. Hard to know. The vintage bike market is quite soft at the moment unless it’s something special, in which case it’s really bid up.

This really nice Constellation is going off in 13 hours in the UK, currently 530 quid but I won’t expect it to stay that cheap as its a sweet one.

I can confirm that I ended up snagging this one. Having just turned 24, I thought I would finally treat myself to my first ‘serious’ watch - I should add this is my first omega.

After reading the forum after-the-fact, it seems I may have overpaid…

The more you enjoy it the cheaper it will turn out to be. I have watches I paid relatively little for. I might have worn them once before they went into a box in a drawer. Those are the most expensive watches I own.

You got a good watch, that’s the most important part. I think if you overpaid it’s only by about 10-20% at most over the wholesale rate for a watch like this, and frankly if it were for sale at a dealer you would be looking at a 100% or more premium. I’d be very happy with that, take delivery get it serviced and know you snagged a very clean example.

I wouldn’t feel too badly about the cost, yes it was above ‘collectors market-price’ but, as @dsio says, significantly much much cheaper than if you had bought retail - plus Connie prices in the UK have always been stronger than elsewhere and since Brexit that has only become worse.

I have been saying for years that these later 60s references have yet to find their feet but I suspect that you have just proved that they are beginning to do so now.

You have bought a particularly good example that any collector would be proud of.
Great case, great dial and with, IMHO, the more attractive domed crown- so you should be really happy about that.

The extra £s you spent now will be long forgotten in a couple of months when you’re proudly wearing your new watch.

I did of course totally understand the point being made and also agree with you regarding political comment, although that Rubicon appears to have been crossed.
Whilst I as much as anyone appeciate the tremedous work that @dsio does for us on here, his many wise words having afforded me the confidence needed to purchase my first vintage Omegas, I fully admit, as a paid-up grumpy old git, to taking exception to the claim that 'Brexit has left the UK on its own little tax island'. The only significant tax changes, post Brexit, have been between the EU and the UK and for the core of the 52% it was not about money but much, much deeper than that.
In my defence, if any is needed, those of us who have been involved in conflicts can tend to be 'touchy' about thinly veiled criticism of our country, admittedly sometimes unreasonably so.....we are what we are.
I feel a ban may be looming, perhaps justified: if so it was a wonderful journey......good luck all.😀

You’ve got nothing to worry about mate, what I was saying is that now buying from Europe attracts the same duty as the US or elsewhere previously did. The UK has always been a hot market for watches as well as cars and other luxury goods which is why historically dealers have slurped up high end cars and watches from Europe to sell there due to the lack of import duty. Now that there is a duty on imports, all of the grey market and used watches flowing over the boarder from Europe cost a significant amount more, and as a result of that, watches already in the UK, which do not attract a duty to other UK buyers do not attract a duty, but receive a price premium as a result.

It’s just normal market forces at play when you have a country that has high demand for watches and has tax on all imports.

Australia, where I live is also a tax island in that sense, there’s a 10% duty on them from anywhere, so watches already in the country carry a small premium to local buyers accordingly.

You did slightly over-pay but I’d rather over-pay for a good watch than under-pay for a crap one.

Appreciated.....I did say I was a grumpy old git, only most of the time though.😀

This US cased DeVille on bracelet is quite a decent one, nice dial and hands, BoR bracelet, clean case and crown.

Very nice - this will be a reasonable way to get a particularly dressy watch, especially with the bracelet. Note that these aren’t commonly in that good condition, most of them are pretty worn down. It also has a great length, the bracelet alone could sell for 250-300$.

Did I mess up? Why was my post deleted?
Did you recommend your own eBay listing or inquire about a piece?

I won one of the auctions listed here and was wondering when was it enough to send a watch back? I’m a newbie - only my second Omega.
