Did I state or imply that the purpose of the forum is to educate newbies?
No I certainly didn't.

😕

So what's the point of this forum if not to educate newcomers.
Are you suggesting that only "experts" should join.
Perhaps that should be made clear.

Maybe take it down a notch Andy - saying you wouldn’t be surprised if people declare your pride and joy as fake does make it sound that you think people are declaring the other one fake just to be mean. They’re really not.

And in a totally friendly spirit, I have to say...
Full-on dial face photo, please! (nice blanket, sure 😁 )

😕

The point of any forum is to share and learn.
I did not state that it was its sole purpose.
I'm amazed I have to explain the difference.

Very nice. I'm not a display case back fan generally, but Omega's caliber 1863 is a nice one to show off.

Nice speedy, the answer to your question is that like most things it takes practice, you look at thousands and thousands of watches, read about known fakes and eventually you can spot many of them at a glance. That’s all it comes down to really, it’s not one specific thing, if it were the counterfeiters would have an easier job fixing “the flaw”. It’s a combination of many factors but that does just jump off the page as a vintage fake in the first post.

You see, from my perspective, your snappy ending, ‘I’m amazed I have to explain the difference’ is both confrontational and rude.

Other posters have suggested that you ‘take it down a notch’ but I’m afraid you seem to be someone who always likes to have the last word.

Shame really

Thanks so much for the warm welcome
If I wasn't interested in learning I would not be here in the first place.

From what I’ve just read the OP had no demanding or confrontational attitude until certain members starting posting unnecessarily snarky replies.
To me it looked like he was saying “oh so it’s fake. That’s a bit shit, how can you tell”. Which is perfectly reasonable.

Andy - it is fake. If you search on this site or google for fake 60’s seamaster you’ll see many like yours. It’s simply a well known type of fake that many of us have seen time and again. Ill hazard a guess that there’s a triangle on the case back with 750 written inside it?

I must say these threads are getting more and more familiair. Are we getting old and grumpy? Or cynical maybe? I am by the way. Or is it the flyby advice culture? I saw a thank you of @andyals. @Watch-up missed that part initially. Maybe we should be a bit more welcoming. Yes, we can.

The truth is probably in the middle as usual... People are getting used to the instant gratification, responses, etc due to the social media usage and other means of communication... And maybe, we, here, tend to enjoy more constructed conversations.

Surely, everyone can relax a bit 😀

@andyals could you please post a photo of the rear of the case, as I mentioned in my first post? If I am correct there will be some certain tells of fakery which was what you asked for earlier on 😀

I'm saddened that I've been met with a degree of hostility for asking the tell tale signs of it being fake.
That was obviously an unreasonable question to ask so I apologise.
I gave a precise answer. It was not meant to be hostile in any way.

@andyals , There are two things that i can confirm here.
Firstly, your watch is clearly fake, secondly, this place used to be friendly and welcoming to people like yourself.

I think part of the issue here is perhaps that the OP doesn't realise how much effort goes into learning how to spot a good'un and by association a bad'un, it can't really be distilled into a single succinct post. He possibly wonders why every one is being definitive about his watch without explaining how and why. Some have in fact given the reasons why in this thread but the message has perhaps been diluted by some nonsense about the warmth of the welcome, and it must be said some impatience from some of the more seasoned posters.

As noted above, a pic of the caseback will help clarify what the OP has. I suspect it is the commonly seen 1960-70s vintage Marbella Special and would expect to see marks on the back more normally expected within the caseback on a genuine piece.

That said I am not sure the post directly above this one is all that helpful or accurate since the place is probably more welcoming to noobs today than it ever was under the other Dennis's watch. Memories are short it seems.

Thanks for that Daivid and you hit the nail on the head.
I wasn't in the least bit upset that the watch is fake as it was left to me so I'm not the one who's been seen off.
I simply wanted to know how to tell, and it felt like just asking that question was an affront to the pride of a few people.
I can't understand why it was offensive just to ask.
If you walked into a shop with what you thought was a rare coin and the proprietor said it was fake, wouldn't you want to know how he could tell?
Anyway it's all fine because it has value to me due to it being left to me.
Someone thought highly enough of me to leave me with what he obviously thought was a genuine watch and to be honest I regret asking about it now.
It makes no difference to how I view it as I wouldn't ever sell it, so maybe it would have been better to have let sleeping dogs lie.
Oh well.

Oh well.

You shouldn't sell it and in fact if you tried any ebay or similar listing would be pulled down pretty quickly. It is basically fit for destruction only which is a shame since if it weren't trying to be something it was not it might be usable.

Based on the earlier posts I dont suppose you will be thanking me for saying this but it is true.

ps there is actually a forum rule on here that we don't discuss fakes so that might explain why you are not getting the fulsome replies you may otherwise expect
