Is that not the sale of items that failed to make reserve in a public auction?

There is nothing wrong with buying a watch after-sale.

yes - even the viewable lots that do publicly sell leave me more convinced that having pictures here and elsewhere is mandatory for an informed purchase

Apparently I hear people would have paid to watch you eat that sandwich 😗

I could make another sandwich. You know, if the market is interested.

Personally, I would prefer all info about the watch public (in the post) and pictures private (in PM). But it's just me.

I believe you are correct, it is just you.

Perhaps I am overlooking something that may be obvious to others, but I don't see a reason why one would be concerned about photos of one's watches remaining open to view for years into the future?

Photos are absolutely central to every online watch community that I know, not only for sales, but in virtually every thread. People post photos as a way to contribute to the community. I think one might ask why a member would be so concerned about hiding photos of his watch, especially one he is selling, it would make me suspicious. Vague concerns about privacy are not compelling to me and are strongly outweighed by the clear value of transparency. Dealers and collectors sell watches at all levels of value by posting public photos all the time, and there is no issue with it. Perhaps the OP simply has an overdeveloped sense of privacy, but in general, it is likely that a seller who wants to hide photos is doing so for a questionable reason, and I'm very happy that the mods will not allow it.

@OmegaLover, since you apparently never post your own watches, do you close your eyes when perusing this site and you chance upon a photo of someone's watch?

Why are you only looking at the negative site on this? Private sales happen all the time, aka P2P. Personally, I prefect to buying watches in private.

I only post watches that I am ready to sell. I do not post watches that I am not selling. Most of my sells done elsewhere.

It sounds like the internet might not be for you?

Yes, I also sometimes buy watches privately. Some are P2P from my local friends and acquaintances in watch meet-up groups, and some are via PM from people with whom I have developed a relationship via online forums. You could also employ that approach. For example, you can watch the WTB forum to see if someone is looking to buy your watch. Or if you have developed friendships in the forum, you can contact those people by PM and ask if they would be interested in buying your watch. If you are selling a desirable watch, and you are a trusted seller, many people will be interested.

I only post watches that I am ready to sell. I do not post watches that I am not selling. .

I think this is unfortunate, and frankly a bit selfish, although I admit there are other ways to contribute. In general, we enjoy seeing each other's watches.

Or sharing in general (which is the basis of a forum).

eBay and Esty are public selling platforms I was talking about Private Watch Sales category in OF, I was just looking for more privacy nothing more nothing less.

I think the difficulty lies in the word private.

It’s not private connoting privacy. It’s private to distinguish it from the dealer sales in the other sub-forum.

I have yet to see a legit watch forum that doesnt require pictures in sales posts. And if you really wanna sell your watch, good pictures would help. To catch attention first. And then to convince one to buy.

Let me guess the internet is where you share everything you got?

This is an online community.

The things you write suggest you do not wish to participate in an online community.

Hence my suggestion that the internet might not be for you.

Are all the watches I own, and have owned somewhere on this forum? Probably.

I think that MWR doesn't absolutely require photos, but they are strongly encouraged. The moderators started a thread asking for opinions about the topic last year, and my sense was that there was unanimous agreement that photos were desirable, but some people felt it would be too burdensome for some of the more technologically challenged members. It is much more difficult to post images there, since you need to use an image hosting site.

I don't think there's a problem with truly private sales by invitation. If you wish to PM selected site members with an offer to sell a watch you don't wish to offer in public or to the public, I believe there's no problem as long as you do so respectfully (no spamming).

I participate by helping newer members, posting pictures is just my thing. But I appreciate your suggestion I'll think about it.

What everyone else said - poor idea that goes against the spirit of the forum. Find a different sales outlet.
Cold not say it better myself...

Good hunting and be safe !
