Omega to Rolex and back to Omega

I'm another one who wouldn't dream of having a Rolex. I have never wanted one. It's hard to say why. I do think that aesthetically they're nothing like as good as Omegas and I don't see the same variety of styles in the marque's range. More importantly - though harder to express - is the spirit, probably more on the part of their owners than the people who make them. Thus I think of Rolex as I do about Range Rover and products that are ostentatious, obvious and pumped up beyond the boundaries of honest functionality.

Rolex has very consistent design aesthetic. They have very iconic watches in multiple categories and they don't do radical redesigns but smaller gradual tweaks. The SS sports watches (sub, GMT, explorer) are super popular and honestly are really good looking. I agree pick the best of both worlds--they are not entirely mutually exclusive and the design elements of the sport watches in particular clearly overlap. The main difference will be size--the Rolex average tends toward to 40 mm while Omega is a bit more progressive with larger dial sizes.

Rolex and Omega both have positions in a collection. The Omegas generally can be obtained for lower cost and are easier to accumulate although I'm not certain they maintain their value as well. Three Omegas so far and more Rolexes. Omegas are a bit tougher for me to sort out and determine value since there are so many versions.

I was interested in getting a number, so I looked at a lot of them and finally settled on the number "9". I was really happy but then started wondering if maybe I should have gone for a color instead. I started looking at all the different colors and finally sold my "9" and went with "orange". I've had "orange" for only a few months but so far it's definitely better than the number "9". Although, last night a friend of mine introduced me to the flavor "cherry", and now I'm not sure anymore...

Started with Rolex, migrated to Omega, still love Rolex.

For people that say "never" on Rolex, I suggest you look into vintage pieces, as they are truly special.

I love them all...

Until recently I was seriously looking at Rolex Sub with no date, and almost pulled the trigger just to see if it is in fact as good as what people say it is. I eventually decided that Rolex Submariner is not really for me because I could not get over the flat crystal and bracelet that feels somewhat flimsy. (All subjective and personal. I'm sure it IS a good watch objectively.) I'm now thinking to get another Seamster in different model...

There is something about Omega watches (especially Seamaster and Speedmaster models) that attracts me more than Rolex watches do.... Of course, if I didn't have other hobbies or bills to pay, I would still get a Sub just to see if it is really as good as what people say it is. 😉

I think where I messed up was getting an Omega America's Cup first. Getting used to a bigger watch and then going to a Submariner was difficult. I absolutely hated the sub. If I get another Rolex, it will ONLY be a Deep Sea Dweller! I like a bigger watch. The submariner to me felt cheap, the watch band was flimsy. I was unimpressed. I know it's an iconic watch, it's just not for me.

Both are great pieces. I love Explorer 1 old edition as perhaps the only Rolex having similar warmth that I feel with my Speedy. Omega watches exudes warmth and comfort especially with hesalite glass that Rolex watches generally lack IMHO. Rolex is more like a perfect industrial production...

I feel the same about the Rolex sub. IMO the bracelet feels cheap and loose. Rolex bracelets tend to get a lot of stretch, they leave a huge space between the links. I hate that fact about them. You get that even worse with 2 tone jubilee bracelets.

Yes you're right perhaps. I too feel the same way with their jubilee bracelets. They are somewhat quite blingy for me to wear as well. I feel as like I'm paid to advertise for the brand whereas I've paid a handsome money to buy that watch. Therefore I don't like them at all.

I'm a big fan of both brands and feel that a "best of" collection would include models of both brands.
See my past post: http://forums.watchuseek.com/f20/rolex-omega-head-head-not-better-thread-2717473.html
As far as my Seamaster vs Submariner story:
I've had 2 Submariner 16610's and a nice matte-dialed 16800, but couldn't seem to hold on to them as the timing was never right for me to manage the $5K price tag. When I discovered the 2254.50, I was sold and made the switch and never looked back. Although neither is perfect, the Seamaster won me over in many more catagories, but I won't go into the details of the head-to-head here...
