One of those watches is a paragon of watch design, and the other is shiny and chunky and cumbersome.

Again - it's all about the details and Rolex has gotten them wrong lately.

the ceramic bezels I think are a little too broad for the pieces. As Archer mentioned the balance of case to bracelet also suffers on some models, as do the lugsand crown protectors. I mean the crown protectors on the 114060M versus 14060M are enormous and way too square.

@yinzerniner The proportion of the sub looks fine to me IMHO. They did the smaller hour markers (non-maxi dial) but I think its less attractive than the maxi dial. Theres subtle differences but the new one doesn't try to be the old one.

I have to disagree, and as evidence I submit a better lit photo (disclaimer: not mine) as yours obscures a good amount due to the dark background. And I won't even compare a ringer like the ghost bezel tritium dial piece in your pic, but just a lowly last-gen Sub.

As @Archer said, the transition from lugs to bracelet on the 116610 is insanely awkward. Also, the "maxi dial" looks overstuffed with the large markers along with the cyclops date, the ceramic bezel is too thick for the case width and finally the crown guards looks like the roided-up neck of a Muscle Beach goon who skipped leg day.
But that's just my observations and opinions, which are rarely deemed of any consequence. If you love your new Sub wear it with pride.

Same exact as I was saying about the no dates (that I'm more familiar with) the older cases are much more balanced. By far. look at those lugs and crown protectors!

As with our bitter argument ( 😉 ) about the Explorer, I still maintain that these looked far better with painted dials. Despite that, even that last-gen Sub looks a lot better with those slimmer lugs & crown guards - that watch remained a paragon of design, until the new broad-shouldered case

I like them both which is the reason why I bought them both. The older one is proportion perfect and we all agree. I purposefully bought the latest one because of the differences. To me, the new one is also proportional because everything together is beefier (bezel, case, crown guards, etc). Just feels great / fresh with a slightly larger wrist presence.

But I completely understand if people don't like the newer look vs. the older look. Thats a matter of personal taste.

I won't start comparing the vintage speedmaster and the 2016 versions...

PS: the lighting of the latest sub is off too on your picture ...

I never really understood Rolex until I owned one. I thought I will not like modern but now I find my modern seriously competing for wrist time.

I think that happens to a lot of people ... I was initially (well, 15-20 years ago) a bit surprised that RLX had some real credibility in the watch-scene ...

that normally is a good sign and separates it from the "marketing fluff only" brands like BOSE, BEATS, B&R, HUBLOT, etc... that are all show and no go in the 'scene...

At one moment of time, I even claimed that I will never own a RLX and now I have a couple and those consistently get most wristtime (all around 36mm or so) 👍 - not necesarily b/c of the brand, but b/c those are such no-nonsense watches that are never "wrong" in a setting.

cheers, Alfred

I bet if you show the same pic 30 years down the road - people will ohhhh and ahhh the now "new" one as well ...

Were people EVER happy with anything new Rolex? I got the feeling that no ... It might simply take a couple of years to embrace the change ...

FWIW - it took me more than a year to find that I finally did not like the SMP (which I owned) ... my uneasiness grew every time I put it on, it somewhat helped putting them on a strap ... but finally ended up finding them truely lacking in design (useless bezel, now-ugly-hands, tacky bracelet, etc...) ... what I try to say is that sometimes those things take time to mature in a person (in both directions - likes and dislikes)

cheers al

Why not compare the atrocity that is the meteorite dial Speedy GSOTM to a tropical Speedy Pro? I think it holds up ..... (jk)

But for real I understand that some people like certain aesthetic choices better than others - I just think a watch can still wear larger without overemphasizing the details.i I really like the newest ceramic SD4000 and I think it would've been the way to go if you wanted something larger - the lugs and bezel aren't nearly as "beefed up" as the Sub, but it still has the wrist presence due to the maxi markers which aren't crowded by the cyclops on the dial. It's simply proportioned better than the Sub while also wearing bigger.

The older Sub looks pure class..the ceramic bezel on the new Sub looks a little too large, but being a sports/dive watch were visibility is important, could be just about justified...but on the new GMT Master 2s I personally find the new ceramic bezels to be very much exaggerated compared to the old model, making the watch lose its business / classy look. Surely a Rolex GMT should be less sporty than a Sub or Explorer 2?

Mentioning the Exp 2...I think that the bezel on the new Exp 2 looks better proportioned than the new GMT...and I will repeat this ad nauseam the Exp 2 is a Pure Tool Watch. Please don´t start a " new Exp 2 fat hands argument" vs the old Exp 2...this is all just personal taste guys...I like Brazilian women and have found that they are very well proportioned, but some may prefer "thinner" non-latin types😀 Cheers.

Need to take a "solo" pic of the Exp 2...this will have to do for now:

Agreed, I don't like the ceramic GMT lines either, specially as they have the same case as the subs.

The older knew had a more elegant less sporty case that I like much better

I definitely have to let these new releases from Omega sink in. My initial reaction is that Omega is starting to get more flashy.

Hi Guys. Check this photos out !

There"s this dude called Deuxani in social media who was so pissed off with New Rolex Air King because of the messy, unbalanced dial & legibility issues. He brilliantly photoshopped the Air King & wants Rolex to take notice of his design

Makes more sense to me....

AhAhAh!!! the one on the right seems to me a watch for a kid who can't read a watch!!!
And it's not a good help for this poor (ehm... rich) kid!
It's like: "what time is it, kid?" and the kid: "I think, it's.... ten past fifty... maybe"
"Mmmmmmm.... You should buy digital, dear kid...."

Who really needs these big "minutes writings"?
(well, ok, the Aqua Terra has also the "minutes writings" - btw, is it its name? - but to me in the AT it's a little touch of design....)

All I wanted to do was share a funny photo of some weird, orange goop, and after ~400 responses and 17,000+ views here we are. The Internets is a strange beast indeed.

I agree with Ms. Fox, it's time to put this beast to bed. And what better way than with a lovely montage featuring one of my favourite bits of music. 😀 Thanks Ms. Fox!

Bonne nuit chère bête.

Like any other event that catches one by surprise, there is the initial reaction, and the one that follows later, after things have settled down.

In retrospect, the 2016 offerings are really no more distasteful than the other blingy, similarly ugly watches that I would tend not to purchase. But the real shock, for me, was comparing last year to this year. It's as if they told the design team from 2015 to pack up and leave town, and recruited a whole new group from...Donald Trump's design team?

I was thoroughly disappointed in the offerings.

I was hopeful that after the AT Master Co-Axial, the Seamaster 300 MC, the Tresor, the Sedna FOIS and the Globemaster, that we would start seeing a real collection develop of classic and timeless watches. Instead we got the second coming of Hublot.
